| Gear & Tackle
A more comprehensive tackle and gear list will be provided upon booking. The following list of gear and tackle is presented as a guide for anglers anticipating a Montana fly fishing adventure. Rivers can outfit your Montana adventure with the highest quality gear and tackle with almost two decades of solid Montana fishing experience.
Rods
Travel rods are highly recommended.
Dry - An 8.5' or longer rod in 5wt or 6wt is ideal for fishing dries. Windy conditions are to be expected in Montana and stiffer rods can help anglers to deal with the wind more efficiently.
Wet - An 8.5' or longer 5-7wt rod rigged for streamers or nymphs is ideal for subsurface fishing.
Reels
Reels should be appropriately sized to allow for 150-200yds of backing as runs into the backing are possible in Montana. Reels should also have a good smooth drag system capable of applying good drag pressure.
Lines
Floating - for most of your Montana fishing a floating line will be just fine.
Sinking or Sink Tip - for streamer maniacs who like chucking big patterns, a sinking or sink tip line is an effective way to fish deeper streams and rivers.
Leaders & Tippet
8-10' leaders tapered to 3-6x tippet will cover most of your fishing situations in Montana. Be prepared with a few leaders and tippet spools for your trip.
The Other Stuff
Licenses are available online and we can assist you in securing a license prior to departure. Comfortable breathable waders with enough room for layering are recommended. Wet wading gear is also advised. Unstudded wading shoes with plain felts are recommended, Montana drift boat guides hate studs just as much as Pennsylvania drift boat guides. Raingear is mandatory and a comfortable rain jacket can make a rainy day much more bearable. You are welcome to bring your own camera and all of the guides carry digital cameras with them. Sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended and we have found Orvis Buzz Off Clothing to be very effective in keeping unwanted pests at bay.
