Fishing Report for August 01, 2006
Personal Use
The Chitina Subdistrict is open continuously through 11:59 P.M. Saturday September 30, 2006. There will be no supplemental harvest periods for the remainder of the season. The river level has been holding steady throughout the week and fishing was excellent over the weekend with limits taking from shore as well as from boats. Dipnetters should continue to have good conditions and good catches for the duration of the week. Information regarding the fishery can be found at the ADF&G; web site:
Chitina web site and the Miles Lake Sonar count web site.
King Salmon Fishing
King salmon fishing on the Gulkana and Tonsina rivers closed July 20th. A counting tower located 2 miles upstream of the West Fork of the Gulkana River with information on king and sockeye escapement can be located on the ADF&G; web site.
Klutina River king salmon fishing is closed on the entire length of the river as of August 1, 2006.
Sockeye Salmon Fishing
Klutina River sockeye salmon fishing picked up this week and fishing is excellent. As of August 1st, only unbaited, single-hook, artificial lures may be used in the flowing waters of the Gulkana River drainage. The Gulkana River is slow but fishing for sockeye salmon will improve in August and September as the later hatchery stock begins to pass on there way to Gulkana Hatchery.
Lake Trout
The larger lakes which include Paxson, Summit, Lake Louise, Susitna, Tyone, and Crosswind Lakes are good places to catch lake trout. Water temperatures are warmer this time of year and fishing at deeper depths should be more productive.
Stocked Lakes
Lakes stocked in early June with catchable rainbow trout are Ryan, Buffalo and Tex Smith Lakes on the Glenn Highway and Pippin and Squirrel Creek Pit on the Richardson Highway. Old Road and Round lakes off the Lake Louise Road and Two Mile and Three Mile lakes along the Edgerton Highway should have good numbers of rainbow trout from previous year's releases. On the McCarthy Road, Strelna, Silver, Sculpin and Strelna Lakes have rainbow trout that hold over from previous years and offer the opportunity to catch larger fish.
