Roads Service recognises the importance of keeping abreast with developments in traffic control technology, not just in the UK, but also throughout Europe.

In 1995, Roads Service's first experience of a European Project on traffic control was in the project called TABASCO (Telematics Applications in Bavaria, Scotland and Others ) Other partner cities in the project included Munich, London, Glasgow, Dublin and Lyon. Roads Service was involved in 3 of the project's workpackages, ie, urban / interurban interfaces, a bus priority system called Balance, and a study of the Belfast to Dublin corridor.

In recent times Roads Service has been a partner with the National Roads Authority (Republic of Ireland) in a project called INSTANT which considers the provision of traffic and travel information on the Belfast to Dublin corridor. STREETWISE is a Euro Regional project involving the national road authorities of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The project involves the investigation and implementation of traffic control and travel information facilities on the Trans European Road Network (TERN).

Intelligent Transport Systems
The application of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in the future will have an increasing important influence on the effective management of the road network. Since 1980, Roads Service has been one of the leading road authorities in the UK in this field, and will continue to apply ITS in the future to improve road safety and maximise the capacity of the road infrastructure.
