North of Gold Beach. The Wild and Scenic portion of this river is 28 miles from Hwy 101. Shortly after crossing the Illinois River Bridge (just above the junction of the Illinois and Rogue Rivers) turn right on county road 450, four miles to Oak Flat, and the trailhead is at the end of the road. For extended hikes, check first at the Gold Beach Ranger Station for information and maps of the area. |

Gold Beach area. Located 32 miles from Hwy 101, this area was established in 1978 and encompasses 36,000 acres of ruggedly scenic mountains and canyons accessible only by trail or river. Two hiking trails are found within the wilderness: the Rogue River Trail 1160, starting at Illahe and ending at Grave Creek about 40 miles upstream; and the Panther Ridge Trail 1253, several miles to the north hand accessible by road along the south fork of the Coquille River. No permits required for hiking, but log in at the trailhead. The Gold Beach Ranger Station has directions and maps. |
