MIDLAND PIKE COMPETITIONS CANCELLED OVER RECENT WEEKS DUE TO ATROCIOUS WEATHER

Weather has been atrocious with storms and unrelenting rain for weeks leaving our fisheries out of order for angling. The Shannon and tribs are now in high winter flood. END OF SEASON TROUT COMPETITIONS ON OUR MIDLAND LAKES YIELDED QUALITY FISH

The end of season trout competitions on our midland lakes yielded quality fish. Sheelin produced a few good fish up to 6.75lbs. The Garda Trout & Salmon Angling Club hosted their end of season competition on Lough Ennell which was won with a fish of 5lbs.  A TALE OF TWO WEEKS ON THE CLARE DRAGOON SEA ANGLING CHARTER

Well this is certainly a tale of two weeks! Since my last report I have had 2 groups of fisherman in for a weeks fishing. The first arrived with a bad forecast and had a good week with the weather working out fine. UPDATED RECENT FISHERIES NEWS TO JANUARY 3rd, 2007

NEW SUITE OF SALMON & SEA TROUT CONSERVATION MEASURES APPLICABLE FOR 2007 - GENERAL INFORMATION SHEET

Anglers, please familiarise yourselves with these measures as they apply to local rivers

S.I. No. 672 of 2006 - WILD SALMON AND SEA TROUT  TAGGING  SCHEME (No. 2)   REGULATIONS 2006

These regulations provide, for among other things, for the quotas of fish that can be harvested by commercial fishing engines and rod and line from those rivers identified in schedule 8 as having a surplus above the conservation limit. In the case of the Shannon (Limerick)  Fisheries Region, quotas apply to the River Feale (4,688) and Mulcair (1,349)

CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE-LAW NO.  814, 2006

This Bye-Law provides for an annual bag limit of 10 fish for 2007, a season bag limit of 1 fish in the period 1 Jan to 12 May, a daily bag limit of 3 fish from 13 May to 31 August and a daily bag limit of 1 fish from 1 September to the end of the season. The Bye-law also provides for the use of single hooks and prohibits the use of  worms as bait once the specified number of fish have been caught in the specified periods and revokes the existing limit Bye –law.

CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE-LAW NO.  815, 2006

This Bye-law provides for catch and release in respect of salmon and sea trout (over 40 cm) in the rivers mentioned in the Bye-law (none listed in Shannon (Limerick) Fisheries District  - see Bye Law No 287 below). This Bye Law comes into operation on January 1st, 2007.

CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE-LAW NO. C.S. 287, 2006

This Bye-Law prohibits angling for salmon and sea trout (over 40 cm) in the rivers specified in the Bye-law. In the case of the Shannon (Limerick)  Fisheries District this applies to Rivers Brick, Galey, Deel, Owenagarney (Ratty), Skivileen, Aughyvackeen. Doonbeg, Annageeragh, Inagh, Fergus, Maigue, Shannon (excluding Mulkear)

S.I. No. 670 of 2006 - SALMON ROD ORDINARY ROD LICENCES (Alteration of Licence Duties) ORDER 2006

This Order prescribes the licence fees payable from 1 January 2007 in respect of salmon rod ordinary fishing licences and the Foyle Area extension licence including a salmon conservation levy equivalent to 50% of the licence fee.  The proceeds of this levy will be invested in wild salmon management initiatives designed to rehabilitate wild salmon stocks and habitats.

S.I. No.  628 of 2006 -  FISHERIES  (Commercial Fishing Licences) (Alteration of Duties and Fees) ORDER 2006

This order prescribes the licence fees to be payable from 1 January, 2007 in respect of salmon commercial fishing licences including a salmon conservation levy equivalent to 50% of the licence fee. The proceeds of this levy will be invested in wild salmon management initiatives designed to rehabilitate wild salmon stocks and habitats.  The Order also prescribes the licence fees to be payable in respect of eel and oyster commercial fishing licences and salmon, eel and molluscan shellfish dealers’ licences issued or renewed for a period commencing on or after 1 January 2007.

S.I. No. 629 of 2006 -  REGIONAL FISHERIES BOARDS (POSTPONEMENT OF ELECTIONS) ORDER 2006

This Order provides for the postponement of elections for members of the Regional Fisheries Boards from 2006 to 2007

 

 GOVERNMENT ADOPTS RECOMMENDATIONS OF INDEPENDENT SALMON GROUP REPORT

Dublin, 1st November 2006

 

Noel Dempsey T.D., the Minister for Communications, Marine & Natural Resources, today announced that the Government has adopted the key recommendations of the report by the Independent Working Group on Salmon. MANAGING FOR THE CONSERVATION OF OUR NATIONAL SALMON RESOURCE IN 2007 AND BEYOND

THE CONSERVATION IMPERATIVE

Marine survival of salmon in the North Atlantic has decreased significantly in the past decade. Less than half to one third of the stock returning to rivers in the 1970s and 1980s is currently returning to Irish rivers. Salmon stocks are unlikely to disappear from Irish rivers in the short term. However, at current stock and survival levels the expectation of large catches such as those in the pervious two decades is unrealistic. In this regard it is vital to afford every protection to the remaining stocks and at this time to clearly prioritise conservation over catch. The current imperative is maintaining stocks above Conservation Limits or at the .....

 

 

FISHERIES AWARENESS WEEK ENDS FOR 2006

Fisheries Awareness Week 2006 now in its second year was a great success. The week attracted lots of media attention and positive reaction and was well attended. The fine spell of weather added to the enjoyment of the week. There were many displays and fisheries information was available at our Open Day venues. While educationally rich it was also great fun with lots of outdoor activities and competitions and the local events throughout the catchment attracted much participation.
