The Marlborough Sounds are a series of drowned river valleys at the north end of the South Island. The individual Sounds wind their way many kilometers inland, providing a safe haven for holiday makers who wish to pursue boating and fishing holidays. Charter boats are available from Picton, which is at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound and is on the main trunk Railway and Main Highway.

If it is a quiet and peaceful atmosphere that you are looking for then the 'Sounds' is the place to go. There are a number of fine Homestays and Lodges in the area and they all offer wonderful vistas of the waterways and bush clad hills. A traveller can really experience peace and tranquility in this area and sample the sea foods such mussels that are a grown as a specialty in this area.

There are also a number of good bush walking tracks in the Sounds
