A lot happening on the Klamath.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is taking public input on its recently released draft environment impact report.  The report recommends trucking fish around the dams to allow for migration.  This “trap and haul” solution is really no solution at all.  The best solution is the simplest – removing the dams.

Citing the impact to snowpack from global warming, Governor Schwarzenegger proposed a $4 billion bond package to pay for new reservoirs and dams.

 

In the opening days of the new legislative session, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Congressman Mike Thompson (D-Arcata) introduced bills that would provide disaster relief to West Coast commercial fisherman devasted by a sharply curtailed fishing season.

 

 

Shelton, Wash — For more than a century, salmon followed Goldsborough Creek as it passed through the grounds of a sawmill, into the middle of Shelton and toward the woods beyond — before bumping smack into a 30-foot-high wall called the Goldsborough Dam.

 

 

CalTrout provided notice that unless the Unites Water Conservation District and the US Bureau of Reclamation concluded with NOAA Fisheries the long-delayed Biological Opinion (BO) for the Freeman Diversion Dam on the Santa Clara River by December 29th, the judge would be asked to shut down the water diversion facility.

 
A joint study by the California Energy Commission and the Department of the Interior released today shows that removing PacifiCorp’s Klamath River dams and replacing their power would save PacifiCorp ratepayers up to $285 million over 30 years.

Humboldt County supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday in favor of removing four of the Klamath River's dams, riding what many say is a wave of public opinion and political will toward restoring salmon runs and economies on the river.
 

Last week the Karuk Tribe filed a report with FERC that outlines the economic benefits of dam removal for Siskiyou County. The study was performed by Ecotrust, a Portland based NGO.
