Newcastle Fight Night December 10 Postponed

For the past 3 weeks we have been negotiating through our US agent Don Majeski to bring the WBA Light Heavy Champion, Italian Silvio Branco, to Australia for a voluntary defence of his world title in early February. All terms and conditions have been agreed.

However, as Branco obtained his undisputed belt (he was initially the interim champ) via the retirement of the then champion Fabrice Tiozzo, the WBA rules state he must first defend against the number 1 contender. This is Stipe Drews of Croatia. Negotiations continue between all and the WBA with the Croatian's obviously pushing their case and the Italians ours and theirs.

Given we are only 4 weeks out from our proposed fight in Newcastle and unable to confirm an opponent, pending the outcome of the above negotiations, we have decided to postpone this fight. To cancel at this stage involves minimum inconvenience to all involved.

It is expected Danny will fight late January / early February should the world title fight not eventuate. In any event we will keep you informed as news comes to hand.

Letter From Danny

Hi there everyone!

I hope you all enjoyed a very safe and happy Christmas and new year, and I hope your 2007 is also safe, happy and prosperous for you and your family.

A lot has been happening lately, world title fights on, off , on, off again, fights being postponed, and changes of destinations and venues. Such is the nature of boxing, unlike football or cricket, boxing does not have a set calendar year or set of fixtures, which unfortunately, and frustratingly, can cause dramas for fighters, promoters and fans.

With that out of the way, my next fight is against Melbourne lad Paul Murdoch, who is the current PABA champion, and whom earlier this year fought unsuccessfully for the WBO light heavyweight title in Germany.

Paul is a very experienced fighter, with 26 victories and a very respectable 16 k.o.'s. I, as usual, have not cut one corner in this preparation, training on Christmas and new years days, and sacrificing a great deal. I am in great shape heading into the final weeks of preparation for this fight.

One thing a lot of people don't realise is just how tough the sport of boxing can be, and the only people who make it to the top are those willing to put their body on the line, and to push beyond its limits, in order to be fully prepared. From going without certain foods and drinks, to constant injuries, to pushing again and again, day after day, through pain barriers in training. This is the side of boxing that people do not get to witness and this is why victory is so satisfying to me.

I am excited about fighting in Melbourne, as I have not fought there since 2003 when I took out Brad Mayo in the 1st round on the Kostya Tszyu show at the beginning of my career. I have a phenomenal legion of supporters in my beloved hometown of Perth, and I am looking forward to taking this important fight to Melbourne, so they can witness the atmosphere of world class boxing, although I think it will be a tough call to outdo the crew in Perth!

I am also defending my IBF pan pacific light heavyweight title, and I am expecting a very hard scrap from Paul Murdoch, who is in his own backyard. I will keep you posted as to my training regime in the next 2 weeks.

Take care and thankyou for your support.as usual, I look forward to repaying that loyalty with a strong and disciplined performance on the 21st of January.

Regards,
Danny.
