Frequently Asked Questions

Libraries Australia is a modern Internet-based service for Australians. It provides access to the national database of material held in Australian libraries, known as the Australian National Bibliographic Database. You can search for any item and locate which library in Australia holds it. Gateways to other major library databases are also provided. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In addition, Libraries Australia supports cooperation and resource sharing within the Australian library community through the delivery of MARC records and the provision of a document delivery service. There is also an incentive scheme which offers a search rebate if your library contributes records and/or holdings to the Australian National Bibliographic Database.

Libraries Australia replaced an earlier system, Kinetica, on 30 November 2005. The Kinetica system in turn replaced the Australian Bibliographic Network (ABN), which was created in 1981 to foster resource sharing by Australian libraries. ABN included the National Bibliographic Database and an online interlibrary loan system. Launched in March 1999, Kinetica extended the ABN's services to include a wider range of databases.

If you have any questions please contact us. A web accessible archive is available for messages that have been posted to the Libraries Australia discussion list and for those that were posted to the Kinetica discussion list .

Records and location information can be added online using special software (the Libraries Australia Cataloguing client software), through a web form or by sending batches of records to Libraries Australia for addition electronically. Libraries can also use Libraries Australia to obtain bibliographic records from all Libraries Australia databases.
