The Saint Stephen's Basilica in Budapest
The Saint Stephen's Basilica is one of the most beautiful and most important
religious and tourist sights of Hungary. The largest church in Budapest,
dedicated to Stephen I (997-1038), Hungary's first Christian King was canonized
in the presence of Francis Joseph I in 1905; the church was built in two
architectural styles (classicist and neo-Renaissance) from 1851 over 60 years.
The church of Greek cross plan was built by Jozsef Hild - architect of the
cathedrals in Esztergom and Eger -, Miklós Ybl and József Kauser. The interior
of Saint Stephen's Basilica, holding 8500 persons, rich in artwork: decorated
with paintings and sculptures created by the greatest Hungarian artists, for
example Mór Than, Bertalan Székely, Gyula Benczúr, Károly Lotz, Alajos Stróbl,
János Fadrusz, Béni Ferenczy and Árpád Feszty.
Since 1971 the mummified right hand of King Stephen the Saint's, called Holy
Right Hand is kept here, in the Chapel of the Holy Right Hand. This is the most
important relic of Christian Hungarian statehood, taken in a procession around
the basilica on 20th August every year (Saint Stephen's day) remembering of the
foundation of the Hungarian state and canonisation of King Stephen (20th August
in 1083). After 20 years of restoration work, which was costed more than 4
billion Hungarian forint (about 15 millions euro) and finished in 2003, the
Saint Stephen's Basilica expect visitors in its grandeur. The Basilica has six
bells, one of them, called Saint Stephen's big bell, situated in the southern
tower. Hungary's largest bell weighing 9 tons, made in Passau (situated on the
Bavarian-Austrian border) in 1990, rings twice a year: on 20th August at 5 PM
and New Year's Eve at midnight.
