What is a career at V&E really like? Our summer associates experience life at the firm first-hand for six to eight weeks. Practice areas vary somewhat between our offices, and each of our Summer Associate programs is slightly different. One thing our summer programs have in common is an active social schedule. We consider this an important time to become better acquainted with you and for you to get to know more people in the firm. Here is how to acquaint yourself with our lawyers, our practice, our culture and our cities.

Interviews
  • Between mid-August and late October each year, teams of V&E recruiters visit campuses across the US to conduct interviews with second year students. We also attend job fairs and minority hiring conferences to meet students from schools where we may not currently interview. The recruiting teams typically include at least one alumnus from the law school. Please view our campus interview schedule for more information.
  • Every team interviews for all of the firm’s domestic offices. Interviews last 20 minutes. Recruiters also examine your law school performance and grades for superior academic ability and strong interpersonal skills. To continue V&E’s tradition of excellent client service, we want new lawyers who are creative and intelligent — and who will enjoy working with us.
  • Selected students are invited to visit V&E during the fall, expenses paid, for a half-day of further interviews. During this time, you will meet several lawyers, learn more about the firm and see our working environment.

Benefits of a V&E Summer
  • Extensive, specialized workshops and training.
  • Hands-on experience interacting with clients and attending depositions, hearings, closings and financial printers’ press checks.
  • Exposure to many legal sections, with opportunities to explore some of your practice options and experience our collegiate culture.
  • A firm sponsor or mentor who works with you closely on a personal level, administers your work projects and schedules lunches with firm lawyers.
  • Excellent pay. In 2006, V&E summer associates earned weekly pay of $2,700 in Texas, $2,800 in Washington, D.C. and $2,800 in New York.
  • A fun social schedule includes: dinners at local restaurants and the homes of firm partners and associates, frequent evening and weekend outings — organized around each city’s cultural offerings — include performing and fine arts events, cooking classes and wine tastings, outdoor activities; and attending professional sporting events.
  • Option to clerk at one or two offices, with a time commitment that varies accordingly:
1 office  Minimum 6 weeks
2 offices 10 weeks minimum (split 5/5)

Evaluations and Offices
  • Depending upon the projects in your section, you may be asked to submit a written work product, summarize your research findings verbally or participate in a brainstorming session.
  • Job offers are made at the end of the summer, between August 1 and September 1.
  • What are the chances that you will be offered a job? Due to our selectivity in the fall, very good. In 2004, 95% of our summer associates received associate job offers or return offers.
You will enjoy your third year of law school with the advantage of knowing you have an excellent job waiting. After graduation, V&E pays your Bar Exam fees and actual moving expenses, and you will report to work in September.
