The Bunny Bugger

If I (Tim S) had to pick a top fly from my boxes of Lehigh flies this would probably be the fly. "But what about a regular wooly bugger?", you're probably asking. Well here's the deal, this verison takes half the time to tie and has twice as much movement in the water, plus it's more durable. Bold words I know, but given the amount of lunker trout and steelhead that have fallen for this fly I have no doubt that the bunny bugger works as well or better than a plain jane wooly bugger.

Hook: Orvis 8808 Streamer

Thread: Size 3/0 or G

Tail: Zonker Strip

Body: Crosscut Strip

Weight: Barbell Eyes/ Bead/ Cone

Start the thread. I like to build a small ball of dubbing up behind the bead and then using my fingernails slide the thread and dubbing ball into the void behind the bead to lock it in place. Advance the thread back to the bend of the hook.

Tie in your zonker strip. At this point you could tie in any rubber legs, krystal flash, etc. that you like to use in your standard wooly buggers. Here I've tied in some krystal flash.

Tie in your crosscut strip. The side with the fur on it should be facing down and the hair should be pointing away from you. Make a few mock wraps to ensure that you have it tied in correctly. When you're satisfied that the strip is tied in correctly use some dubbing or yarn to even out the under body up to the bead.

Wrap the crosscut strip forward and tie off. You'll find as you fish these that the action is very lifelike and enticing. As you become more comfortable wi this simple pattern you can tie off your crosscut strip after a few wraps and tie in additional krystal flash and rubber legs and then finish wrapping the fur.
