Baggage allowance

The following allowances apply to flights operated by KLM, Air France, Northwest Airlines and Kenya Airways. If your flight is operated by another KLM partner airline, check with your booking agent or directly with the operating carrier because more restrictive rules may apply.

Checked baggage

There are two bagage allowance concepts: 
  1. Piece concept (PC is mentioned in the Baggage Allowance box of your ticket)
    Applicable to/from:
    - USA, US territories, Canada, Mexico, Brazil
    - Air France flights to Papeete, Havana, Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Madagascar, West Africa, Djibouti
    - KLM flights to Ghana (Accra)
    - Air France/KLM flights to Egypt (Cairo), Nigeria (Lagos, Kano, Abuja)
  2. Weight concept  (A kilogram weight is mentioned in the allowance box of your ticket)
    Applicable to/from: all countries not falling under the Piece Concept

Exceptions:

  • Some exceptions may apply. 
  • Special rules may apply to certain items of sports equipment
  • Restricted articles may not be transported in your baggage at any time. 
  • To protect handling staff from physical injuries when lifting baggage, our check-in staff may not accept any piece of baggage weighing more than 32 kg. (Exceptions may apply only for electric wheelchairspets and musical instruments when approved in advance.) Please contact your travel agent or local KLM reservations office in order to request extra baggage.
  • Please do not lock your check-in baggage when travelling to the USA. The baggage needs to be checked for explosives.

One piece of hand baggage (max. 55 x 35 x 25 cm, 12 kg/26 lbs) including an overcoat/blanket, umbrella/walking stick, purse, camera bag, and a reasonable amount of reading material

Economy Class allowance plus: 

One second piece of hand baggage (max. dimensions: 45 x 20 x 35 cm), the total weight of both not to exceed 18 kg/39 lbs.

Flights departing USA

one piece of hand baggage (max. 115 cm total dimensions, 12 kg/26 lbs), including a personal bag (handbag or laptop), coat, umbrella and folding buggy

 

Flights departing UK

As a result of new regulations, passengers departing from any UK airport are only allowed to carry ONE item of hand baggage, irrespective of the class they are travelling in.


Exceptions:

Some exceptions apply. Restricted articles may not be transported in hand baggage at any time. 

Hand baggage - exceptions

Infants under the age of 2 traveling on an infant fare (10%) are allowed 1 piece of hold baggage (max. 55 x 35 x 25 cm, 10 kg/22 lbs). In addition you may bring a collapsible stroller. The stroller must fit under the seat or in the baggage compartments. Large or non-collapsible strollers must travel as hold baggage.

Partner airlines

Policies of some KLM partners may differ. On flights operated by KLM cityhopper, you may be asked to hand in your hand baggage at boarding, due to limited storage space in the cabin. KLM Europe Select passengers will always be allowed one piece of hand baggage (55 x 35 x 25 cm) on these flights.
