Bands that break up leave an indelible impression on the hearts of their fans. We long for the day they put aside their differences and reunite. Unfortunately, in many instances that will never happen. Joe Strummer passed away, so a true Clash reunion is over. The same goes for a true Echo and the Bunnymen tour since drummer Pete de Freitas was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in 1989. Members of both the Jam and the Smiths despise one another, so we can probably count out that option.
However, every now and then the planets align themselves in a manner that the improbable occurs. The Police performed at this year’s Grammy awards, and the next day a full blown reunion tour was announced!
One of the eighties most popular and distinguished acts, the Police ended their career amidst the chaos of extreme and bitter fighting that at times escalated to physical violence. Their last album together, “Synchronicity”, was made at the lowest point of their career in terms of the mates even wanting to be in the same room with another. Their talent prevailed and a disc of momentous proportions was produced, but the cost was high and they decided during their last tour to hang things up afterward.
It is impossible to turn on the radio that plays eighties music and not hear Roxanne, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Don’t Stand so Close to Me or Every Breath You Take. Their tunes have stood the test of time and their influence is obvious in many popular bands today. However, the original is always better, and we are fortunate that this reunion has occurred!
