Try smaller, subtler
fishing flies to entice more early-season brown trout
April-early June
is a great time for fishing flies, because it’s prime spawning season
for many fish species, like brown trout. The only problem is, so many
anglers are out using the same kinds of fishing flies, it’s hard to do
anything novel that might give you an advantage. Since popular sport fish
like brown trout are already hard to catch, it might be time
to try a different angling approach.
Use unique fishing flies for more
early season success
I think a real key
to success in the Spring is fishing flies that are not like what every
other fisherman out there is casting. Most brown trout will see more
than their share of long, tapering tails and brilliantly colored
hackles.
Instead, try
fishing flies that are skinny. By this, I mean lures that are tied in
a very tight pattern, with no loud and flashy colors or lengthy
trailing pieces. In the right conditions, this difference might
attract more brown trout, simply because it’s not the standard fare
every other angler is throwing at them.
Another argument
in favor of this simpler fishing flies approach during spawning season
is that brown trout tend to be more jumpy and nervous this time of
year. Casting an intrusive, garish fly at them will more likely scare
them off than entice them into striking.
Finally, you’re
going to encounter more weeds and stick-ups in May and June, so
fishing flies that are less expansive won’t be as likely to get
snagged and lost. We all want to catch more brown trout, but we don’t
want to lose a bunch of lures in the process.
