Not all search engines were created equal

There are thousands of search engines and directories around the world but the vast majority of traffic is generated but just a handful of those.

Some of the more important search engines and directories include:

• Altavista
• All The Web (FAST)
• Ask Jeeves
• Google
• Inktomi
• LookSmart
• Lycos
• MSN Search
• Overture
• Yahoo!

Although these search engines are the ones which produce the most direct traffic, there are other considerations in gaining excellent search engine ranking. This includes gaining listings in smaller directories that provide indirect benefits for the position a web site achieves in the larger search engines, such as Google.
