Penina Championship Golf Course - Algarve - Portugal

Penina Golf Course

Penina Golf Club

Penina Championship Course is probably one of the most famous golf courses in the Algarve, designed by Sir Henry Cotton and the course he wished to be remembered by. The course has been upgraded in recent years and now hosts the Portuguese Open every year.

On the opening hole you are put to the test straight-away, a par 4 with a dogleg left, on your approach to the green the fairway narrows giving you a tight second to the green. Stroke index 1 follows, a 401 meter par 4 with an out of bounds water hazard on the left, with this hole it is the tee shot that is the crucial part if you do not get a long drive here you have no chance to get to the green in 2 (unless you have a perfect draw for your second shot). The green here is almost domed and has a water hazard protecting the front, a true stroke 1 index.

On the first nine there is only one par 5, at 431 meters it seems reasonably easy. It is a dogleg left and has a ditch running across the fairway and the green is protected by water, the safety rout is to the right over a channel and then your 3rd over the water to the domed green. The 9th is yet another trick dogleg left, get a good drive around 200 meters and you have a good chance of a par.

The back nine has 4 par 5s, hopefully a chance for some birdie's. On the twelfth tee this hole looks straight forward, but watch out for the water protecting the green.

The last 2 holes are par 5s and give you a relaxing finish to what would have been a memorable round of golf.
