2006 Halibut Derby
Jackpot Prize $43,612 August 1 was quite some time ago, but Duane Olson has been waiting since then to see if his 341 lb. fish would win the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby, 2006. The good news for Duane is that his fish is indeed the winner of this year’s Derby. Others challenged him over the summer but none of them quite made it. Now Duane is the Jackpot winner of $43,612. Duane was out fishing with Capt. Tony Arsenault on the “Falcon”. It was a great fishing day and Duane was lucky to get this monster up from 400 feet of water. Duane and Tony struggled with the fish for about 40 minutes and were finally able to land it. All the while the other anglers on the boat were catching their final halibut too. About an hour later, the big monster was hanging on the Derby scale a good 50 pounds bigger than the derby leader. This fish produced another winner too, Ryan Szymoniak, an employee of the Sport Shed sold the winning ticket to Duane and he receives $1000. This is the second time in recent derby history that Capt. Tony Arsenault has brought in the winning fish for one of his anglers. In 2004 the derby winner, Don Hanks of Sparks, NV was also fishing on the “Falcon” when he caught his derby winner weighing 352 pounds. For his fishing skill and effort, Capt. Tony wins the Captains Prize in the Derby. This amount is $3,965. Tony also wins the captain's prize from Power Pro Fishing Line of $2,000 because he uses Power Pro Line on his boat. The lucky lady angler is Christine Redman of Midland, Michigan. Her large fish weighed 286.6 lb and she wins $3500. The jackpot prize and the captain’s prize are based on the number of derby tickets sold. There are also monthly big fish prizes, a released fish prize, a lady angler prize, 3 prizes for kids only and over 85 tagged fish with values of $500-$20,000. Four prize winning tagged fish were caught for a total of $2000. Drawings were done for other prizes at the annual Awards Dinner held Oct. 6. The drawing for 2 round trip tickets to Hawaii is for one lucky ticket vendor. The winner was Silver Fox Charters. The released fish prize of $10,000 went to Chris Goudoras of Ronkonkoma, NY. Three kids tickets were drawn from the 319 tickets sold to those 12 and younger. The $500 prize went to Sean Hill of Anchorage, $200 prize to Jordan Dixon, Salem, OR and $100 prize to Alexis Swieczkowski., Wasilla
