What NOT to say to a vegetarian
|
|
Anonymous Vegan writes "VeggieRomance.com, a leading dating site for vegans & vegetarians, reveals the most common (and irritating!) comments encountered by vegetarians. Surveying thousands of vegan & vegetarian members, VeggieRomance.com has compiled the top ten comments most likely to get a veggie's goat....
What not to say to a vegetarian!
1) What do you eat?
2) How do you get your protein?
3) You don't look like a vegetarian.
4) I'm vegetarian too... apart from chicken... and fish... but they don't count.
5) You must be tempted by a bacon sandwich?
6) If it weren't for us (carnivores) there wouldn't be any animals.
7) I'm not a vegetarian, but I could never eat a dog or a horse, that's barbaric...
8) Don't worry, you'll grow out of it.
9) Here's some lettuce.
10) Why?

Lawn Pesticides Uprooted Amidst New Lawn Season

20 Consumer and Environmental Groups Ask Home Depot and Lowe’s
to Supply Poison-Free Products for Lawns and Landscapes
Washington, DC, April 13, 2005 – Today, 20 consumer and environmental groups from across the country asked the national headquarters of Home Depot and Lowe’s Home Improvement, two of the largest home and garden retailers, to carry a full range of organic, non-toxic lawn care products to protect the health of children, families, pets and the environment and to reconsider the sale of “weed and feed” due to its hazards and environmental pollution. Recent surveys show almost half of all households buying lawn care products are seeking non-toxic alternatives.
“Children are particularly vulnerable to exposure from lawn chemicals,” says Dr. Routt Reigart, pediatrician at the Medical University of South Carolina. “Many of the chemicals typically used on lawns present acute and chronic risks to children’s health.”
The groups also announce the release of an online Declaration on the Use of Toxic Lawn Pesticides and formation of the National Coalition for Pesticide-Free Lawns, a growing popular movement of consumer and environmental groups, coming together to educate the public, retailers, landscapers and policy makers about the hazards of lawn chemicals and the viability of safe alternatives. Fourteen of 30 commonly used lawn pesticides are ‘probable’ or ‘possible’ carcinogens with studies linked to cancer.

Cows hold grudges, say scientists
|
|
ONCE they were a byword for mindless docility. But cows have a complex mental life in which they bear grudges, nurture friendships and become excited by intellectual challenges, researchers have found.
Cows are capable of strong emotions such as pain, fear and even anxiety about the future. But if farmers provide the right conditions, they can also feel great happiness.
The findings have emerged from studies of farm animals that have found similar traits in pigs, goats and chickens. They suggest such animals may be so emotionally similar to humans that welfare laws need to be reconsidered.

VEGETARIAN RELIEF AGENCY BRINGS FOOD TO THE WORLD
|
|
Anonymous Vegan writes "World’s largest vegetarian food relief
Food For Life Global, the world’s largest vegetarian and vegan food relief organization, has made a name for itself within the vegetarian community and among international relief agencies. With operations spanning 50 countries, the charity has served more than 100 million freshly cooked vegetarian meals throughout America, Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe. “Every second of the day, FFL is serving a needy person in the world through its free food restaurants, mobile kitchens, school programs and emergency services,” explains its Australian director, Paul Turner.
The project was founded in 1974 after an elderly Indian swami, Srila Prabhupada, asked his yoga students to not allow anyone within a ten mile radius of his temple to go hungry. "

Vegan M.D. vs The Atkins Corporation
|
|
Dr. Michael Greger M.D. and vegan activist scared the Atkins Corporation
when he put up his website atkinsfacts.com.
The Atkins Corporation had good reason to be scared. Dr. Greger is
intelligent, very well educated, very well versed in the literature,
and a charismatic speaker.
I am sure they have nightmare visions of him going on the talk show
circuit to promote his upcoming anti-atkins book.
So, they threatened him.
Dr. Greger has retained lawyers and escalated his battle.
He has published the threats from The Atkins coporation and his rebuttal
to their points of argument on his web site:

The first hearing in the landmark lawsuit against Atkins Nutritionals will be held on October 26, 2004, in West Palm Beach, Florida. The plaintiff, 53-year-old Jody Gorran, will argue that the Atkins company should be held liable for the severe heart disease he developed while on the diet.
