Getting to Athens... ...and moving around Getting to Athens is easy. Athens has a new International AirPort. There are also regular ferry services to national and international destinations. The central Rail-Hub linking the capital to the rest of Greece & Europe is also situated in Athens. Information on national and international train services is updated daily. When in Athens, the the quickest way to move around central locations is the Athens Metro (SubWay). Connected to the Metro is an underground train linking the Piraeus port to the Kifissia northern suburb. Buses & trolleys also cover most of Athens. Taxi companies operate in the greater Athens area. Drivers can check the Athens traffic conditions with the traffic maps (updated every 15 minutes), before hitting the road.
Few words about Athens Athens was conquered and destroyed time & time again but, like the Phoenix (the mythical bird) always managed to rise from its ashes. In ancient Greece (4th century BC) during the Peloponnesian War, Athens was one of the leading powers. The Romans conquered it in the 1st century BC. Subsequently during the Byzantine period it suffered greatly at the hands of the Catalans, Florentines & Venetians. The Turks also conquered the city in 1687, who ruled it until May 1827. In 1833 Athens became the capital of Greece & from a farming community (on the Acropolis) developed into the cosmopolitan centre that it is today.
