Congratulations to the Class of 2007 Public Service Scholars!

The Public Service Scholars (PSS) program provides a framework for Carolina students who want to strengthen their commitment to service by exploring service opportunities, meeting others who care about similar issues, learning new skills and linking their academic experience to making a difference in their community. The program is open to all full-time University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students with at least four semesters remaining. To graduate as a Public Service Scholar, students must have a minimum GPA and complete 300 documented hours of service, one service-learning class, four skills trainings and a senior service portfolio.

Since its inception in 2003, the Public Service Scholars program has rapidly grown from 78 to more than 1,000 students. In four years, participants have logged more than 198,000 hours of service in communities throughout North Carolina, the nation and the world. But more than numbers, students’ personal growth and increased commitment to service attest to the depth of student engagement, and continue Carolina’s proud tradition as the nation’s first public university.

Two years ago, Chancellor James Moeser recognized the inaugural class of fifteen Public Service Scholar graduates. This year, six times as many seniors graduated as Public Service Scholars and wore Carolina blue and white cords at commencement to signify their legacy of service. These 96 graduates as a group reported more than 43,000 hours of service, an average of almost 450 hours per student.

Information about each scholar’s public service, major, and post-graduation plans is available HERE.
