Goals of the Tar Heel Bus Tour

The Public Service Roundtable, a grassroots group of faculty who developed the idea of the Tar Heel Bus Tour in 1997, made reaching out to the state their primary goal. Our goals have not changed since then. We aim to help faculty gain a better understanding of North Carolina and the people we serve.  The tour highlights the University’s public service commitment by promoting scholarship and service that are responsive to the concerns of the state and contribute to the common good.

Along the way, participants will:

  • Help new faculty and senior administrators gain a better understanding of North Carolina and the people we serve.
  • Highlight the University’s public service commitment.
  • Promote scholarship and service that are responsive to the concerns of the state and contribute to the common good.
  • Visit the places most of our students call home.
  • Encourage bonding of faculty across disciplines.
  • Show that Carolina is connected to the entire state.
  • Introduce people to aspects of North Carolina that they may otherwise never see.
