France:
to travellers, France can give the impression of a market – it`s one of those rare countries where every region offers something worthwhile and distinctive. One of the best ways to get to know France is to visit a local market. Strolling among the stalls on Boulevard Richard Lenoir in Paris one morning, we watched as finicky chefs picked through crates of Brittany mussels and truck drivers recharged themselves with tiny cups of strong coffee. There are many reasons why France remains the number one tourist destination in the world. Traditionally known as an ancient country rich in cultural heritage and remarkable historic landmarks, France is inhabited by an energetic people that have happily married tradition and art de vivre with progress and innovation. A land of mysterious prehistoric caves and Celtic monoliths, Roman ruins, medieval fortresses and Renaissance castles, France also boasts the world`s most extensive high-speed train network which makes getting around a breeze. Europe`s highest peak, the Mont Blanc (15,750 ft. or 4800 m) is situated in the French Alps. France has 5500 kms of coastline and 4 sea fronts as well as 15 million hectares of forest. Because of its shape, France has been known as the `hexagon`, with the different regions offering different landscapes and sceneries. The capital city of Paris is also the capital of fashion. The mighty monuments of the proud metropolis tell of the splendour of its bygone days. Churches crowned by cupolas, magnificent churches, majestic gardens, twisting alleys and elegant boulevards bring the history of Paris back to life. Then there are the signs of a more modern era: the steel finger of the Eiffel Tower pointing towards the skies, built a little over a hundred years ago. The provinces offer their own landscapes and cultures: the glittering crowds of the Cote d`Azur, the elegant chateaus of the Loire Valley, the hospitable vineyards of Bordeaux, the rocky coasts of Brittany, the dramatic slopes of the Alps and the Pyrenees, the charming farms and villages of Provence. France is the largest country in Western Europe and is bounded on the south by the Pyrenees Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea; on the east by the Alps and the Rhine River; and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel. The countryside, relatively flat in the northwest, gives way to gently rolling hills in the north and west and the Massif Central in the center. France is also well-known for its cuisine, considered to be the best in the western hemisphere. The country can satisfy just about any traveler`s taste.
