Alaska's Record Salmon Catches

When it comes to trophy-size salmon fishing, Alaska has a lot to offer.  With hundreds of rivers and streams full of these fierce fighting fish, it's no wonder why so many sport fishermen flock to Alaska to catch some of the world's largest salmon. Some have caught king salmon as large as 80 pounds and more! Just a 40 pound salmon alone is quite large, and many of these large salmon are caught commonly each year.

So if you're out to catch the biggest fish in Alaska you've got some work cut out for you. Besides finding that secret "hot spot" that only you know of, you'll have a few record catches in front of you to beat.  Below are the current records for largest salmon caught while sport-fishing in Alaska.

 King Salmon (Chinook)
     97 pounds, 4 ounces
     Caught in the Kenai River
     by Les Anderson in 1985.

 Silver Salmon (Coho)
     26 pounds
     Caught in the Icy Strait
     by Andrew Robbins in 1976.

 Red Salmon (Sockeye)
     16 pounds
     Caught in the Kenai River
     by Chuck Leach in 1974.

 Silverbrite Salmon (Keta)
     32 pounds
     Caught at Caamano Point
     by Fredrick Thynes in 1985.

 Pink Salmon (Humpy)
     12 pounds, 9 ounces
     Caught in the Moose River
     by Steven Lee in 1974.
