Special Olympics Special Smiles and AGD Partnership
In support of the mission to empower people with intellectual disabilities to reach their full potential, Special Olympics Special Smiles (SOSS) has partnered with the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Foundation to help identify providers of primary dental care for Special Olympics athletes. Special Olympics Special Smiles is part of the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes initiative.

The AGD Foundation is encouraging dentists to include their names in the SOSS online directory of providers. By including your name, you are not obligated to provide free service; your listing simply means that you are willing to treat special athletes.

Let’s Compete…for a Free Trip to Shangai
As an incentive to AGD members to add their names to the online directory, SOSS is sponsoring a very special contest. The AGD region that signs up the highest percentage of members in the online directory will be eligible for a prize. From that winning region, a name will be drawn for a trip to the Special Olympics International Games in Shanghai, China, this fall. The winner will receive free round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, and a per diem for Sept. 28 to Oct. 5, 2007.

Not only will the winner attend the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics and observe the games, but he or she also can participate in the Special Olympics’ “Train the Trainer” program and join colleagues from around the world in screening athletes prior to the games. Once trained, the winner can screen athletes in his or her community and can train other screeners for continuing education (CE) credit.

How Can I Enter the Competition?
Just click here to go to the sign-up page. Your name will automatically be added to your region, making you eligible to win. (Note: You must be logged in with your AGD account in order to be counted.)

Help Foster A Brighter Tomorrow For General Dentistry!
Consistent with its commitment to improving public oral health and increasing quality continuing dental education opportunities for general dentists, the AGD Foundation has rasied over $1,800,000 in support of the Academy of General Dentistry Foundation’s first-ever capital campaign. Funds contributed by corporate partners, AGD members, and friends of general dentistry will be used to support the following:

General Education Fund
We are proud to announce that you have exclusive access to discounts on the most up-to-date continuing dental education in the industry involving implant and implant restoration programs. The AGD and the Perio Institute have partnered to offer ten, two-day, hands-on implant placement workshops entitled, "Hands-on Implant Placement Workshop: Safe, Simple, Predictable". Nobel Biocare makes these high-quality workshops possible through a generous grant to the AGD Foundation. These courses will be offered regionally throughout North America-and at a discount of $50 to AGD members. Find out where and when.

Program Development Fund
This Fund will allow the AGD to proactively address dental industry challenges by providing resources for programs focused on industry study and collaboration. Proposed initiatives include the establishment of a Leadership Council with representatives from ADA recognized dental specialties, dental societies, and other related professions including medical doctors, pharmacists and surgeons. Leadership Council meetings will promote ongoing dialogue to identify challenges, establish goals, encourage collaboration and avoid duplication of efforts.

AGD Foundation

The Academy of General Dentistry Foundation is proud of its tradition as an integral part of the Academy of General Dentistry. The Academy of General Dentistry Foundation works hard to further the goals of the Academy of General Dentistry and the people it serves and is dedicated to improving the oral health of the public and supporting the efforts of the general dentist through financial support of scientific, educational and charitable initiatives, which are determined by the Academy of General Dentistry.

The Academy of General Dentistry Foundation accomplishes this by:
Advancing Academy of General Dentistry initiatives
Giving back to the profession of general dentistry
Developing innovative educational initiatives
Fostering the excellence of oral health care

So what does this all mean?
What does the Foundation actually do with its donations to meet these goals?  We work hard to help broaden our members’ access to new continuing education experiences, learn new skills and explore new challenges.
