Wireless Mythbuster
Myth #1: A computer with built-in wireless will allow you to surf the internet, send e-mail, print, etc. without wires.
Truth: You need at least 4 things to have a wireless internet connection.
#1 You must have a broadband Internet connection. Most people either have DSL (phone company) or cable Internet connections available to them. If not, you have just run into your first major stumbling block to a wireless Internet connection. The DSL or cable router, must have an ethernet port to connect to your wireless router.
#2 A Wireless Router. This is a box that you plug into the DSL or cable router from #1. Some DSL and cable providers, sell a DSL/cable router with built-in wireless support. There are dozens of wireless routers out there. Some routers that you can pick up for around $50 at Wal-Mart, Staples, OfficeMax, etc. are the Linksys WRT-54g, the Netgear WGR614, or the D-Link DI-524. The current standard for wireless networking is 802.11g, make sure that all of your devices support that standard.
#3 A Wireless equipped laptop or desktop computer.
#4 The manual. Even though the wireless router may work out of the box with your wireless laptop, it will not be secure and private until you take the time to go through the setup CD or manual that accompanies your wireless router.
