Alagnak River Rainbows
|
Our season opened June eighth with a confluence of factors which produced trout fishing that can only be described as “epic”. The ice went out early this year, mid-may, and the water level has stayed low, making the river extremely fishable. Schools of Salmon smolt were thick and the rainbows were gorging themselves readily in any holding water (current seams, the tailouts of island and gravel flats were our main targets).Anglers averaged fifteen to twenty fish daily with at least two hogs (twenty five inches or better) sliding into the net. Our largest trout of the week measured thirty two inches and was caught just two miles upstream from the lodge. Articulated leaches, sculpin patterns and muddlers in black, olive, white and purple have all been effective, with smolt imitations catching their fair share as well. The end of our opener saw the caddis hatch, and some very nice fish were taken on dries, up to twenty five inches. The bows are beginning to look up and the mouse fishing is starting to catch on. This was truly the sort of week that could spoil an angler
