VoIP or "Voice Over Internet Protocol" is a relatively new technology that uses
the Internet as a global telephone network. By leveraging a high-speed Internet connection, VoIP software and (in some cases) a
telephone adapter device, you are able to make inexpensive (or free)
local and long distance telephone calls.
Many companies now offer Web Phone
service. Three types of Internet Phone services are available:
Types of Web
Phone Services
"Web to Phone" - ability to make a call to a phone
(conventional or cell phone) from a computer using VoIP
software.
"Phone to Phone"
- ability to make or receive calls that
are routed over the Internet (thereby reducing long distance charges).
"Web to Web" - ability to make a call from one computer to
another computer.

Web Phones and VoIP provide a number of advantages over conventional phone service:
- Significantly lower local and long distance charges
- Ability to obtain a phone number in a different city, state or country
- Ability to make and receive calls when you travel or
move permanently (anywhere in the world!)
