The Strategic Road Improvement Team in each Roads Service Division supports the Government's objective to 'ensure that our roads are of a standard capable of producing reduced and more reliable journey times' by improving the strategic road network, giving priority to the key transport corridors.

All major road improvement schemes are appraised under the Government's five objectives for transport, Environment, Safety, Economy, Accessibility and Integration, to ensure that they represent the best solution in environmental and sustainability terms and are consistent with the Government's transport policy.

Major road improvements are focussed on removing bottlenecks on the key transport corridors where lack of capacity is causing serious congestion, and to improve the environment by providing bypasses to towns situated on the key transport corridors, thus relieving the effects of heavy through traffic. Widened carriageway schemes are focussed on improving overtaking opportunities on single carriageway sections of the key transport corridors where traffic volumes do not currently justify the construction of dual carriageways. These 2+1 schemes have 2 lanes in one direction and 1 lane in the opposite direction, providing guaranteed overtaking opportunities and improving reliability of journey times and reducing driver stress, leading to improved road safety.
