Mary Peters, CTC, president and owner of Friendly Travel Inc./American
Express in Alexandria, Va., was elected to serve a one-year term as ASTA’s
vice president and secretary on Sept. 10, 2006. Previously she served
as chair of ASTA’s 2003 World Travel Congress and CruiseFest East
in Miami. Peters, an ASTA member since 1982, also has served as director
of ASTA’s Area 5, which covers the Central Atlantic, Delaware Valley
and Carolina chapters.
Prior to serving as Director for Area 5, Peters held offices as a chapter
secretary, first vice president and president of the Central Atlantic
Chapter. She also served as Chapter Presidents Council chair for one term
and has been a member of several ASTA committees, including Consumer Awareness.
Peters entered the travel agent industry 41 years ago in Springfield,
Ill., when she began working at Circle Tour and Travel. She came to the
Washington, D.C., region in 1976 and joined a local agency. After just
a few months, Peters opened her own travel agency, Friendly Travel, Inc.,
in Friendly, Md. She later opened Friendly Travel of Alexandria and a
third agency in Washington, D.C. She sold her agencies in Maryland and
Washington, D.C. and decided to concentrate on making her Virginia location
flourish.
