SHRFB LAUNCH LOUGH
SHEELIN WATER QUALITY REPORT THIS WEEK
Unfortunately weather has
gone hill over the past number of days with heavy rain and strong
winds which is hampering angling at time of writing and has resulted
in rising water levels. Trout fishing remains fairly good on Sheelin
and O'Flynn despite the bad weather. Although there's been plenty of
water and good angling conditions Salmon fishing has been
disappointing on the River Feale. The highlight of the angling news
update this week was the launch of the Water Quality report Entitled
"Urgent steps to end the long saga on Lough Sheelin" This is
available to download and is accompanied by a Press Release on
Monday last. TIGHT LINES!

 URGENT
FINAL STEP REQUIRED TO END THE LONG SAGA OF LOUGH SHEELIN WATER
QUALITY
For
the last 30 years Lough Sheelin has been a barometer of the status
of water quality in Ireland and has received both national and
international attention. The Shannon Regional Fisheries
Board today launched a valuable new report on the phosphate and
nutrient levels entering Lough Sheelin
(“Lough
Sheelin and its catchment Water Quality Status and Nutrient
Loadings 1998-2005”) and clearly concludes that
the lake remains polluted.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR SALMON ANGLERS - BROWN TAGS
From May 13th, 2007 the Minister introduced a system of Brown Gill
tags for certain rivers where it is considered necessary in the
interests of conserving stocks to closely monitor angling quotas to
ensure river based quotas are not exceeded. The River Mulcair in Co
Limerick is covered by this scheme.

LOUGH DERG ANGLERS ASSOCIATION NEWS
The Lough Derg Native Fish Biodiversity Study is
ongoing with the first batch of samples sent to
Canada and Belfast for analysis. The samples consist
of representative samples of perch, pike, roach,
bream, eels and trout. When results are available it
is intended to hold a seminar in Killaloe in the
autumn to deliver the preliminary findings. A random
aging of an 8lb brown trout by Dr Fran Igoe, Shannon
Regional Fisheries Board showed that it lives for 2
years in a river before migrating to the lake and
becoming cannible. It was found to be 8 years old.
Dr Igoe will demonstrate the methodology in aging
scales to anglers in September. The Lough Derg
