Eclipse Internet achieves carbon neutral status in drive to reduce environmental impact

Eclipse Internet, Kingston Communications'; award-winning ISP, today announced that it is now fully carbon neutral. This is the first step in Eclipse's campaign to reduce carbon emissions and the company is also encouraging its customers to follow suit with a carbon emission calculator and advice on teleworking available at www.eclipse.net.uk/business. This is the latest step in a group-wide commitment to greener working practices for Kingston Communications.

Audited and approved by The CarbonNeutral Company, this milestone represents a key part of the ISP's drive to reduce the environmental impact of its broadband business. To calculate its carbon footprint, Eclipse was measured on an extensive range of factors from electricity consumption through business travel and deliveries to commuting by employees. Although many organisations do not take the carbon cost of commuting on board when calculating carbon emissions, it accounts for a significant proportion of any company's CO2 outputs (23 per cent in the case of Eclipse).

Eclipse director Mark Lang, commented, "Our new carbon neutral status is a major step toward reducing our impact on the environment, but it is the first of many. We are committed to becoming a fully green ISP, providing a better, more sustainable service for our many thousands of business and residential customers.

"We were particularly surprised to see the proportion of our own carbon emissions that resulted from staff commuting to work, and as an ISP, are conscious that we have a part to play in helping other businesses use broadband and internet applications to reduce their emissions by cutting down on the travel required by employees."

As part of its carbon offsetting programme, Eclipse is investing in wind farm technologies in India, a methane capture project in Pennsylvania and a Ugandan forestry project. All projects are designed not only to reduce carbon dioxide but also to support the local economies.

Jonathan Shopley, Executive Director of The CarbonNeutral Company stated: "Companies can no longer ignore the need to deal with their environmental impact. It's great to see ISPs like Eclipse taking this issue seriously and working hard to achieve full carbon neutral status. This is a long term investment but, supported properly, will pay great dividends for staff and customers alike."
