Burn a DVD Movie
Follow these simple step-by-step directions to create perfect backups of your favorite DVD movies. All of the software used is FREE.
How can you Burn a DVD Movie?
You can burn almost any type of DVD movie to a writable DVD disc once you have the correct software. The software that I am using in this tutorial is FREE so the only thing that you need to buy are blank DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW or DVD-RW discs (which can be found for less than 50 cents a piece). Here are the two free programs that you need to download to get started:
Editor's note: Making personal backups of CDs and DVDs is a highly controversial topic that is still being tested in the courts. ComputerBuyAdvice does not encourage or condone the illegal copying of commercial discs.
- DVD Shrink 3.2 (do a Google search for "DVDShrink 3.2" to find the file)
- ImgBurn 1.3.0 (do a Google search for "ImgBurn" to find the file)
Once you have downloaded and installed both of the programs listed above, you are ready to burn your DVD movie. Follow these directions carefully and you will have a fully functional backup copy of your original DVD.
Burn a DVD Movie Step 1 - Using DVD Shrink
- After you have downloaded and installed DVD Shrink, Start DVD Shrink
- Click Open Disc
- In the DVD Shrink Open DVD Disc box, select the DVD drive that contains your movie (this will usually be selected for you), and click OK
- DVD Shrink will begin analyzing your movie, this can take several minutes
- Once the movie has been analyzed, you should see a display similar to this:
- Now you are ready to backup your dvd movie to the hard drive. You need about 5 GB of free hard drive space to accommodate a full DVD movie.
- Click Backup in DVD Shrink. You should be presented with the following:

- Be sure to select ISO Image File in the "Select backup target" box, then take note of the target image file, you will need that in the following steps.
- Click OK in the Backup DVD box to begin making a backup of your dvd movie. This process can take up to an hour or so. You will presented with the following message when DVD Shrink is finished making your backup. Again, take not of the location for your DVD image.

- Now that you have an ISO file that can be burned onto a blank DVD, you need to move to the next page.
Go to the
Burn Your DVD Page to complete the process and Burn your DVD Movie.
