Pall Mall cigarettes brand were introduced in 1899 by the Butler & Butler Company as one of the world’s first “premium” cigarette brand.
In 1907, Pall Mall brand was purchased by American Tobacco. with the sale of Butler & Butler company itself. The new owners used the premium sigarets brand to introduce new innovations in cigarettes design. This was how "king-size" cigarets were launched on the tobacco market.
In 1960 Pall Malls cigarettes were the number one brand of cigarettes in America. Later, the tobacco company created a standard again. This time for long cigarettes by introducing 100mm cigarettes, known as “longs”.
In 1994, as a result of BAT's acquisition of American Tobacco Company in 1994, the Carlton, Pall Mall, Misty, Tareyton and Lucky Strike sigarets brands were added to the B&W; brand family. During this period of time, these cigarettes brands fallen in design and remained only filterless cigarette brands known on the tobacco company. Finally, in 2001, Pall Mall was re-launched nationally as the "new filtered" Pall Mall. The new Pall Malls were launched by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (today the second-largest tobacco company in the USA, the first being Phillip Morris. The company manufactures about one of every three cigarettes sold in the country and employs about 6,800 people). R. J. Reynolds continues to make unfiltered and filtered styles of Pall Mall for the U.S. market, emphasizing the latter. British American Tobacco manufactures and sells Pall Mall outside the U.S.
Kurt Vonnegut, a Pall Mall smoker himself, has used the sigarets brand in several of his novels. He has been quoted as saying that they are "a classy way to commit suicide."
In the mid 50’s, in television advertising and live announcers, the brand's name was pronounced as "Pell Mell", while the package clearly says "Pall Mall.
