There are two main types of broadband Internet access available for
residential customers today: digital subscriber lines (DSL), which uses existing
telephone lines, and cable connections provided by cable TV companies.
DSL includes technologies such as ADSL and
SDSL.
The
cable
modem's "first-to-market" position has given it the early lead among
high speed Internet technologies and presently accounts for nearly 50%
of high speed Internet customers. DSL, however, has made
strong strides and is expected to account for 40 percent of the
residential high-speed Internet market in five years. A number of
new broadband technologies are also becoming available.
