Before the age of air travel, people seeking overseas travel had to make the trip by ship. The options were limited to small ships, which were very hard to travel any great distance for the average passenger, or the newer, and much larger Cruise Ship, referred to as Ocean Liners or Passenger liners, which routinely made trips across the many oceans. The most common voyages were transatlantic crossings from New York to London.
Likely the most famous cruise ship in history, RMS Titanic, become known for a tragic loss of life during a ship wreck. The sinking of the Titanic has been written about as both books and movies alike.
