To productively retrieve the flies you can tuck the rod under your armpit and pull the line as if you were pulling a rope, with one hand over the other. This gives the fly a more realistic appearance to the fish. Since the fish are usually more visible on their approach to these flies this is what makes fly fishing more enjoyable. This may help you to get started with tying your own. First you will have to decide what flys that you like best and get all the supplies to get started. It is an investment to start with but you will save alot by tying your own flys.
