From Cezanne to Picasso
The Ambroise Vollard gallery masterpiece

By the early XXth century, Ambroise Vollard had become the principal dealer of artists such as Cézanne, Gauguin, Maillol, Matisse, Cezanne and Picasso.
He passionately defended unknown or banned artists and supported several young painters such as Derain and Rouault. He had an unerring eye for the unique talent of each artist: it was Vollard who encouraged Maillol and Renoir to produce sculptures. Considering the renown that many of these artists would subsequently achieve, his enlightened investments now seem incredibly far-sighted. He played a decisive role in the development of modern art until the early decades of the XXth century.
The exhibition underscores Ambroise Vollard’s achievement in promoting careers and styles to collectors, art critics, and artists, who used his gallery as a meeting place to discuss and buy modern art. The exhibition also highlights Vollard’s importance as a creative catalyst for artists who experimented in making a variety of artworks including color print albums, sculpture, and decorated ceramics.
