2005-2006 school year lesson choices

Careers in Marine Science
Grades 7-12
Young VIMS scientists bring demonstrations of marine research to your classroom, exposing students to the academics and experience necessary for a career in ocean science. A lecture introduces the breadth of the field; hands-on demonstrations highlight biology, ecology, geology or applied science and how these disciplines help the Chesapeake Bay.

Coastal Storms
Grades 9-12

Your students explore meteorology, biology, chemistry, physics and geology – as they relate to storms in the marine environment. An overview sets the stage and illustrates the interdisciplinary nature of marine science. Then, students rotate through cooperative learning stations that include data retrieval and analysis on storm impacts in the Chesapeake region.

Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV)
Grades 9-12
SAV are vital to the recovery of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. Students gain an understanding of SAV diversity, importance and survival requirements through a PowerPoint presentation. Problem-solving activities include keying out live specimens and analyzing habitat and water quality data to evaluate the distribution and growth of different sea grass species.

Outlook on Ocean Science
Bringing marine science lessons to your classroom
Grades 7-12

Outlook on Ocean Science brings VIMS graduate students to your classroom or program. These eager young scientists bring an authentic and first-hand look at current marine research and potential careers in ocean sciences. This program provides:

  • A 45- to 90-minute science lesson including lecture introduction to concepts and content, with demonstrations or labs for hands-on relevance.
  • VA SOL correlation (details available upon request).
  • An understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of oceanography.
  • VIMS marine science graduate students eager to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with your students.

This program is available to schools within a 2-hour travel radius of VIMS (Gloucester Point, VA). Lessons are designed for classes or groups with an academic interest in marine science, biology, environmental or earth science.

Programs are offered November-December and February-May
