| Secret Folder 1.4.2
Hide your embarrassing files!
Creator: OneApp Software
Shareware: USD $20
Update note: Besides fixing a minor bug, version 1.4.2 adds a 'Get Info' window that displays information about your hidden folder's contents, e.g., creation and modification dates and time, the number of contained files and folders, etc. The update is free to registered users.
If you need to conceal files or folders, Secret Folder will help keep others from seeing or messing with them. The idea is simple: Anything you don't want seen is placed into a single folder which is then made invisible (because you can only conceal one folder, hiding multiple files and folders is accomplished by placing them together into one suitcase folder).
Secret Folder uses just two windows. With the 'Choose Folder...' button, you select a folder to hide and then click 'Make Invisible'.
Once hidden, your secret folder doesn't appear in your array of folders or in the windows view.
Then, to reveal the contents of your hidden folder, you open the program and click the 'Make Visible' button. For extra security, you can assign a password.
Two observations:
- First, while the author cautions that the contents of Secret Folder could be hacked, anything not visible on the desktop or in folders is often enough security for most of us.
- Second, Secret Folder prevents your folder from casual observation in your filing system. However, if you know the name, date, etc., of a file or folder, a Sherlock search will locate it. Sherlock displays the item 'greyed-out' and unavailable for opening, but it displays the file/folder and its path nevertheless. That may not be sufficient security for some folks.
You can get 30 program launches before the registration nags begin. Time enough to decide if Secret Folder meets your needs.
Mac OS 7.1 or later (I'm using it with 8.6). 1MB download. 4096k application memory.
