The Departments of Mathematics and Biology and the Institute for Quantitative Biology

at

East Tennessee University

offers a

Summer Undergraduate Research Program

We are pleased to announce that as a result of common efforts of the Departments of Mathematics and Biological Sciences, we have received an award from the National Research Foundation (NSF DUE-0337406). The award supports interdisciplinary research for Undergraduates in Biological and Mathematical Sciences (UBM). A major challenge to undergraduate research is at the interface of mathematics and biology (Quantitative Biology). The program is offered and recommended for undergraduate students who are considering careers in applied mathematics, biological and biomedical research and interdisciplinary sciences.

Summer research opportunities will be available in a variety of fields including developmental biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, population genetics, molecular biology, behavior, chaos theory, graph theory, complex systems, self-organization, molecular structures, neural networks, dynamical systems and time series analyses. More information about research interests and projects may be found at www.etsu.edu/iqb.

There is no course requirement for participation in the program. However the following courses are recommended: Math 1090, Math 3090, Biol 4907, Biol 4367/5367. Courses in statistics and/or calculus are also recommended. The summer research experience will be supplemented by an informal student-faculty seminar course, in which students meet on a weekly basis to discuss their research projects and career opportunities with other student participants and faculty. At the end of the summer all teams will participate in a poster session sponsored by the ETSU Honors program. At the end of the research program a written report must be submitted to the IQB director and to the group leader faculty member.

 Who will be supported?

Each summer four research teams will be supported. Every research team will be comprised of at least one mathematician, one biologist faculty and two undergraduate researchers. The teams can be larger and can include graduate students as well. However, support will go only to the undergraduate researchers. Only undergraduates who are integrated in a research team will be supported

What is supported?

-       $2750 stipend for each student for a nine week period.

-       $900 housing subsidy per student for the summer

-       $500 support for student to participate in a conference

-       $500 research supply support for the student and the team

Conditions and eligibility:

The program is open for any USA citizen and resident aliens with an established home institution. Graduated students cannot apply. Information about the University and the area available at www.etsu.edu.

The program accepts proposals for only those research projects which are listed on the IQB site: http://www.etsu.edu/iqb/projects.htm. Pure mathematical projects or biological studies with simple statistics will not be considered.

Every student has to submit a proposal before 22nd of March to be considered. The forms will be available online at the IQB site: http://www.etsu.edu/iqb/stipend.htm.

The proposal has to be written via consulting both faculty members of the projects and recommendation letter from both faculty members are required. Additional recommendation letters are recommended. A web based contact form is available at http://www.etsu.edu/iqb/students_interface/Results/submission_form.asp. You have to register before 10th of January to be considered for application. Late registered students maybe considered depending on the pool of applicants.

All registered students will receive detailed information about application details. These details will also be available at at http://www.etsu.edu/iqb/stipend.htm

The decision will be made by an interdisciplinary panel in last days of March. The main factors are: merit of and the quality of the proposal, the recommendation letters and previous research experience.

More and updated information is available: www.etsu.edu/iqb/ Information about our past program is available at http://www.etsu.edu/iqb/summerprg2/summer%202004.htm.
