UPDATED FISHERIES NEWS TO JULY 3rd, 2007

URGENT FINAL STEP REQUIRED TO END THE LONG SAGA OF LOUGH SHEELIN WATER QUALITY

For the last 30 years Lough Sheelin has been a barometer of the status of water quality in Ireland and has received both national and international attention. The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board today launched a valuable new report on the phosphate and nutrient levels entering Lough Sheelin (“Lough Sheelin and its catchment Water Quality Status and Nutrient Loadings 1998-2005”) and clearly concludes that the lake remains polluted.

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR SALMON ANGLERS

From May 13th, 2007 the Minister introduced a system of Brown Gill tags for certain rivers where it is considered necessary in the interests of conserving stocks to closely monitor angling quotas to ensure river based quotas are not exceeded. The River Mulcair in Co Limerick is covered by this scheme.

CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE LAW NO 818, 2007 This links to a Microsoft Word Document

This Bye-law provides for catch and release in respect of salmon and sea trout (over 40 cm) in the portion of the Lower Shannon from O’ Briens Bridge downstream to the Blackbridge. The Bye-law also prohibits the use of fish hooks other than barbless hooks and worms as bait.

CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE LAW NO. 820, 2007 This links to a Microsoft Word Document

This Bye-Law prohibits the use of any fish hooks other than single barbless hooks and imposes a ban on the use of worms as bait in angling for salmon and sea trout over 40 cm once the annual bag limit has been reached.   The Bye-law also incorporates the provisions of the existing bag limit Bye-law No. 814, 2006.

CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT BYE LAW NO 821, 2007 This links to a Microsoft Word Document

This Bye Law sets out the opening and closing dates (and hours) for the draft net salmon and trout (salmon includes sea trout as defined in the Fisheries Consolidation Act 1959) commercial fishing season and prohibits draft net fishing for (salmon and sea trout) in all districts other than those rivers mentioned in schedule 8 of the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme Regulation (S.I. No. 672, 2006). The Bye Law also prohibits the use of monofilament material in draft nets with the exception of Cork Harbour where monofilament material in draft nets is permitted.

This Bye Law prohibits drift Net, Snap Net and Other Engine fishing for salmon and trout (salmon includes sea trout as defined in the Fisheries Consolidation Act 1959) in all fishery districts.  The Bye Law also prohibits having on board a boat or vehicle these nets with the intention of fishing for salmon or trout.

This Bye-law prohibits the taking or attempting to take by rod and line salmon and sea trout over 40 cm.  The Bye-law also provides for the closure of the river Black Water in Waterford and incorporates the provisions of the existing close rivers Bye-law No. C.S. 287, 2006

These regulations amend the Control of Fishing for Salmon Order 2007 (S.I. No. 129 of 2007) to provide for the issue of available unallocated draft net licences to persons who held a drift net licence or a draft net licence under the River Shannon Tidal Waters (Issue of Fishing Licences) Regulations 1935 (S.R. & O No. 664 of 1935).

These regulations prescribe that no drift net licences or draft net licences may be issued in the tidal portion of the River Shannon. The Order also revokes the River Shannon Tidal Waters (Issue of Fishing Licences) Regulations 1935 (S.R. & O No. 664 of 1935).
 

SHANNON FISHERIES REGION - CONSERVATION OF SALMON AND TROUT BYE LAW 817, 2007 This links to a Microsoft Word Document

This Bye-law prescribes the minimum size of trout at 35 cm which may be taken from Lough Derg south or downstream of the bridge at Portumna and prohibits angling for trout during the period 1 October each year to 14 March in the next following year.  The Bye-law also provides for a minimum size of trout at 25 cm which may be taken in the waters of the tributaries of Lough Derg and incorporates the provisions of the Limerick District Bye-law Nos. 614, 1980 and 488, 1954.

The latest advice from Irish and International Salmon Scientists is that Salmon stocks are under increasing pressure from a wide range of environmental factors and over exploitation. Action is required immediately to stem this decline. The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board and other government agencies have been working to help. This brochure provides information on Why Catch and Release and the science of Catch and Release and the practical steps for successful release of Salmon. NEW SUITE OF SALMON & SEA TROUT CONSERVATION MEASURES APPLICABLE FOR 2007 - GENERAL INFORMATION SHEET This links to a Microsoft Word Document

A new suite of  Wild Salmon conservation measures have been introduced by the Government to help the restoration of Salmon stocks. This includes the closure of certain rivers to angling for Salmon and Sea Trout where they fail to meet their conservation limit.

Within the waters of the Shannon Fisheries Region, only the Rivers Feale and Mulcair are open to Salmon angling and they are subject to quotas. The season opens on these rivers March 1st to September 30th.

A bag limit also applies of one Salmon or Sea Trout (>40cm) to May 12th. 3 fish per day until August 31st and one fish per day to September 30th to a total of 10 fish for the year. The Bye-law 814 below also provides for the use of single hooks and prohibits the use of  worms as bait once the specified number of fish have been caught in the specified periods and revokes the existing limit Bye –law.  You can download a copy of the regulations here or download the information leaflet.
