Coarse Angling & Fisheries News Update

Dated Wednesday August 8th, 2007

BREAM SHOWING AGAIN IN NUMBERS AS WATER LEVELS GRADUALLY RECOVER FROM SEVERE FLOODING

Coarse angling has stepped up a gear as water levels slowly recover from the bad flood conditions of previous weeks, although there was a slight rise again following some heavy rain over the bank holiday weekend. Drumbad Lake in the Upper Shannon was a hotspot with quality Tench reported. Lough Allen is still in the angling news with good weights coming off Heron's and Barney's shores in the local competitions. The Bream fishing has really improved in the last ten days on the Strokestown and north Longford lakes with some of the catches reaching 100lbs. Some good Bream catches were reported in the Suck Valley, despite the very high water. The mid Shannon around Banagher has fished well, also Rogers island at Portumna is throwing up good weights. The Lough Derg island swims around Killaloe are starting to fish again and worth a try. Login to our next report which will not be until the end of August due to holidays. Meanwhile happy angling and TIGHT LINES!

BIRD WATCH IRELAND - ANGLERS PLEASE BE AWARE

Farmers of the Shannon Callows in conjunction with the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) and BirdWatch Ireland are appealing to fishermen to only use surfaced tracks to gain vehicle access to the waters edge when fishing the river along the Shannon Callows (meadows in the immediate vicinity of the River Shannon from Athlone to Portumna.)

UPPER SHANNON

ShRFB reports for Lanesboro

No anglers about other than transient boat traffic - little to report, water levels are still high.

Mark Smith from Maynooth reports on his recent trip to  Drumbad Lake
" I camped on this lake for two nights, what a great venue. I had 15 Tench all between 3lbs and 5lbs and one nice Bream of 6lbs, all in the first night and morning. My friend got 8 Tench and a load of Rudd. He stopped counting the Rudd after his twentieth fish. The next night I had 10 Tench, the heaviest weighing in just under 7lbs. My friend had four more Tench and had over 50lbs of mainly Rudd. The successful method was ledgering at thirty to forty metres, using three or four red maggots as bait. If you are in the area make sure to fish it.

Brian Bohan   CHAFLYNNS COTTAGE & GUIDING SERVICE  MOHILL reports on angling in the upper Shannon region around MOHILL and CARRICK ON SHANNON

After some heavy pre-baiting, Lough Mc Hugh has started to fish okay with good bags of Roach and Hybrids and some skimmer Bream.  Mick and Terry from Youghal County Cork fished it for 4 days straight, no Tench.  Only the 2 stands to the far left are fishable due to heavy weed growth. Some Dublin anglers have fished it over last weekend through the night ,They had 4-5 Tench , hybrids and Roach.

Photo:  Pat and Pete had a nice bag of Roach and hybrids.

Photo: Conor Mc Grath fished Black lake and had some nice Bream and Tench in a late evening session.

Lough Rynn is still very high on the sheep walk. I fished Clonbonny one of the evenings last week and had some nice Roach and hybrids and three Tench. Barneys shore and Heron's shore on Lough Allen are producing some good weights on match days and for the pleasure anglers.

The Sluice gates on Lough Allen produced some 60-120lb bags of Bream for visiting English anglers when the water is high.

Kevin Lyons, MELVIEW LODGE GUESTHOUSE, Drumlish Road, Clonrollagh, Co Longford Tel : 003534345061 Mob: Email:  info@melviewlodge.com Web: http://www.melviewlodge.com  covering fisheries in the LONGFORD AREA and the STROKESTOWN LAKES

Photo: Stan from the West Midlands with some good Bream

The Bream fishing has really improved in the last ten days with some of the catches over the 100lbs. In some lakes the water has started to return to more normal levels. However some lakes in and around the Strokestown area are still high and waiting to recover from the floods. Lakes around the north Longford areas have been producing some good fish. Pre-baiting every evening has proved to play a major part in the size of the catches and mix of species. On our next report which will be the end of August there will be pictures of some big Bream catches from guests of Melview Lodge in Longford.

Photo: Richard from the West Midlands in the UK with some fine Bream.

Richard and Stan from the West Midlands who were on a return trip produced some good nets of fish. Kevin commented that they stuck to just two venues all week. Each evening they pre-baited before leaving and it paid off for them with some great catches of Bream and some big Roach ( well done lads ).

Nigel Barns from Preston repeated his catches of 2006 with some cracking nets of Bream, Hybrids and Roach. Nigel who last year had good catches of big Tench to 6lbs and Rudd to 3lb-4oz was unable to fish his favourite lake due to flooding. Kevin stated that some of the venues need pre-baiting a few times before attracting the better fish, it's worth the effort though! More Bream pictures from Nigel in our next report.

MID SHANNON AREA

The ShRFB reports for Ray Duthie Old Forge Banagher, Bait Stockist, Tackle and ACCOMMODATION PROVIDER  Tel: 057 9151504.  BANAGHER area this week.

Fishing is good in the mid Shannon, although angling numbers are low. Meelick match stretch is producing skimmer Bream, adult Bream, Roach and hybrids. The Banagher town stretch is fishing but river flows are very fast due to the high water. The grand canal at Ferbane, Pollough and Rahan. Tench catches are better than last year on the canal. The Sheebeen and Salmon run are also fishing well as is the Rogers Island at Portumna.

ShRFB reports for the RIVER SUCK VALLEY - Mid River Suck

The river was starting to recover well but the heavy weekend rain brought levels back up again and is presently very high. However, water levels have receded enough to allow fishing from the stands on the fisheries which were recently submerged. Coarse angling on most of the lakes other than Stoneham's are producing fish. An English visitor had some great Bream catches in the area. A three day competition was fished  at Donamon and Glinsk, over the holiday weekend - Saturday, Sunday and Monday. 14 - 16 anglers took part each day. The Saturday event was won by Rory Dunne from Roscommon. He had 6kgs 700g. His brother Shane was 2nd with only a few grams less in weight. Third place was Bob Gilbraith, Co Roscommon. On Sunday the winner was Bill Cassidy, he had 16.5kg, lots of nice skimmer Bream in the catch. Rory Dunne was second with 7.5kg. 3rd: Shane Dunne. On Monday the winner was Shane Dunne with 7kgs. Rory Dunne was 2nd with 4kg. Third was Bill Cassidy with 2kgs. Anglers were pleased with the results.

TJ O'Brien, TJ's ANGLING CENTRE KILLALOE Tel: 061 376009 Mob 087 8108225 reports for the Lower Shannon and East Clare Lakes

Angling guests of TJ O'Brien are fishing on the island swims presently. A party last week had 320lbs mixed bags, mainly Bream. Best individual bag was 175lbs. Anglers are encouraged to fish the island swims. If conditions are very bright  try a late evening or early morning session for best results. The East Clare lakes are fishing also with Tench reported in morning sessions.
