LIVELY PETER ACTION REPORTED ON OUR MIDLAND LAKE FISHERIES

It was all action last week on Owel with lots of fish caught into dark, including many quality wild fish to 4lbs. Next Sunday the club host the hugely popular Patti Doolan Shield on Owel for those interested in taking part. Some good fish were reported by anglers fishing late into the evening on Ennell. Once fish surface on Ennell it's always worth a a few evenings to catch some of those elusive large wild trout which Ennell is renowned for. Sheelin produced some quality fish on sedges and is worth fishing this week. Due to the Galway races, lesser angling numbers were evident on Lough Acalla compared with previous weeks but some good catches were reported nonetheless. The days are ticking away and the biggest Game and Country Fair of Ireland is only weeks away. The dates are August 25th and 26th. the venue is the splendid Birr Castle Demesne Co. Offaly.  The Shannon Fisheries Board will have a stand at the fair and we look forward to meeting with you there. Meanwhile tight lines and enjoy the rest of the Peter season. URGENT FINAL STEP REQUIRED TO END THE LONG SAGA OF LOUGH SHEELIN WATER QUALITY

For the last 30 years Lough Sheelin has been a barometer of the status of water quality in Ireland and has received both national and international attention. The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board today launched a valuable new report on the phosphate and nutrient levels entering Lough Sheelin (“Lough Sheelin and its catchment Water Quality Status and Nutrient Loadings 1998-2005”) and clearly concludes that the lake remains polluted.

BIRD WATCH IRELAND - ANGLERS PLEASE BE AWARE

Farmers of the Shannon Callows in conjunction with the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) and BirdWatch Ireland are appealing to fishermen to only use surfaced tracks to gain vehicle access to the waters edge when fishing the river along the Shannon Callows (meadows in the immediate vicinity of the River Shannon from Athlone to Portumna.)

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

Poor weather conditions spoiled the trout fishing on Sheelin over the holiday weekend. During the more suitable interludes some good fishing was had.  Michael Kelly L.S.T.P.A. fishing with Peter O'Reilly had 22 fish for the week, all released, best fish 3.5lbs. All fish were caught on dry sedges. Billy Quale, Co Armagh fishing with Owen Mc Fadden from Kells had 10 trout last week, best 4lbs, all on sedges. Eddie Clinton L.S.T.P.A. had 5 trout on sedges, most were released, best fish 2.5lbs. Gene Brady L.S.T.P.A. had 4 fish on dry sedges, best 2lbs. Frankie Harten, Kilnaleck had the best reported fish of the week at 9lbs. Well done to juvenile angler N Lynch from Cavan on landing a fine trout of 6.75lbs. Sheelin is worth fishing over the coming week - try a range of sedges fished dry, stay with small sizes, down to 14's and even 16's.

LOUGH ENNELL

There were good Peter hatches on Ennell and the lake has attracted a number of anglers. Some quality fish were caught late into the evening.  Peters are still hatching as well as Silverhorn sedges and bloodworm is getting results. Jim Greham from Clara had a great fish of 6lbs 8ozs. Donal Connolly from Dublin had a fish of 4lbs. Ennell is worth fishing this week.

For updates contact Pat Mc Donnell, Fisheries Officer  Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Mullingar  Office Tel: 044 9348769 mornings

LOUGH OWEL

The Peter hatch was prolific on Owel with plenty of fish reported caught, including many quality wild fish. Over 100 trout were officially returned to weekending Sunday August 5th, this being a sample of the true total catch over the week.  Sean Kenny Drogheda had the best reported fish at 4lbs. Saturday was a good day with lots of fish caught.  Sean Greene Co Down, Greg Long Dublin, Frank Kenna Mullingar, Steve Turner Athlone, Noel Bennett junior, Noel Foley Dublin, Martin Ryan Drogheda, M Henshaw Dublin, Christy Dunne Rhode, Fran Nugent and John O'Neill Dublin, P O'Neill Mullingar, P. O'Donogue Longford and John O'Malley Mullingar were among some of the many anglers who had good fishing and submitted their catch returns, well done to all.  The Dan Mullally evening trout competition attracted 22 anglers and 20 fish were caught on Wednesday. Tom Gorman Mullingar won the competition with a nice fish of 3lbs 5ozs - see Michael Flanagan's angling notes for a full report on the competition. The main Peter hatch is over now but there is still plenty of sedge around to interest fish. Do get out over the coming week. Tight Lines.

STAR ANGLER LANDS HIS CATCH ON OWEL..

The last week here in the Midlands has being very busy on the angling front. The Peter season is in full swing and some cracking trout are feeding late into the night. Owel and Lene hosted Peter competitions early in the week. On the World Cup scene, plenty of local anglers qualified for the Final, fished bank Holiday Monday.
My good pal Terry McGeehan of the Irish daily Star was in town Friday and we landed some beautiful trout on Owel.

DAN MULLALLY TROPHY....

I fished last Wednesday night August 1st on Lough Owel. This event hosted by Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association proved a huge success. On the night plenty of trout were caught with local Motor mechanic Tom Gorman powering home
with a cracking trout of 1.62kg, second place went to Dublin angler Martin Mc Quaide with a fish of 1kg and Mullingar International fly angler Mick McCormack finished 3rd with a fish .87kg, Pat Brady finished 4th. The lake is producing some fine fish late into the night and is well worth a trip this weekend. Next Sunday the club host the hugely popular Patti Doolan Shield. This is one of the biggest club competition of the season. Fishing is from 11am-7pm. Boat and Engine Hire Jack Doolan 044- 93 -42085.

STAR ANGLER ON OWEL....

Over the bank Holiday weekend plenty of visiting anglers fished the Midland lakes. My good pal Terry Mc Geehan of the Irish Daily Star newspaper dropped down on Friday evening and we spent a few hours on Lough Owel. It was a nice bright evening but the wind was very strong and it never dropped coming near dark. We struggled in day light to stir fish and it was not till just dark that the Owel trout came to the surface. I kept the boat quite tight to the sheltered shore at Murray's point and fishing dry Peters we boated six super trout. It only lasted about
45 minutes but it was certainly heart pulsing stuff. The night was black dark and we could not see the trout and the takes were furious. I think Terry is still a bit dazzled by the flash of my camera. I hope to spend a few more nights on Owel this week and you never know what the night will turn up.

GAME & COUNTRY FAIR 2007....
The days are ticking away and the biggest Game and Country Fair of Ireland is only weeks away. The dates are August 25th and 26th. the venue is the splendid Birr Castle Demesne Co. Offaly. This week we received a press release from the Angling Director of this years Fair. Philip Maher is in charge of the angling events and he has quite a busy weekend in store for anglers. The casting competition scene is geared for all standards from novice to the real pro. The  professional class is sponsored by Hardy, then Philip has another A class open to all except professionals. There is also a youths section and lady section taking place over the two days. Philip Maher has really done his homework for this years Game and Country fair. Along with super competitions, which have serious prizes. Philip has put together an Anglers Row where you can browse through all the latest gear and nicknacks in the Angling World. Philip can be contacted on 087-9377539.

SYMPATHY....

Sadly we have some bad news this week. Well known Mullingar resident Eamon Boyle sadly passed away. Eamon was a popular figure in the Castletown Geoghan area where he delivered the post for quite a number of years. He was also the brother of Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association Chairman Andy Boyle. On behalf of Angling Focus we sympathize with Andy and all the late Eamons family members and friends.

HELD OVER....
As I was away for the World Cup Fly fishing championships some angling news items are on hold till next week. All going well I will catch up on these next week.

Due to the Galway races, lesser angling numbers were evident on Lough Acalla compared with previous weeks. There was good fishing reported with bag limits obtained by a number of anglers. There was a good fly hatch and rise of fish especially during late evening time and midday. The most successful flies were Peter Ross, Sedges, Green Peter and Muddlers. P. Doyle from Ballygar Co Galway had 2lb fish on a Golden Olive. D. Coffey, Ballinasloe had a brown of 1.5lbs on an Invicta. Prospects look good for the coming week.

CAMCOR RIVER BIRR

A big flood over the weekend resulted in a few fish caught along the Chapel bridge section of the river as the water levels dropped on bank holiday Monday.  Other than this fishing has been disappointing overall, - too many floods!
