Whatever employees do within the workplace is an extension of the company. Computer use in an office opens up liabilities on two fronts:
- Network security — Misuse of the Internet can lead to spyware, viruses, decreased bandwidth, and poor network performance.
- Legal responsibility — Inappropriate content, from pornography to racist sites, can be a legal liability to the company through harassment lawsuits or even breaches of contract.
Controlling Internet usage is twofold: the first step is to define appropriate use policies, and the second is to deploy employee monitoring software to monitor Internet activity. iPrism handles Internet problems by focusing on employee monitoring – tracking and controlling how employees use the Internet. This is a business-friendly approach to employee monitoring so that employees can perform their work effectively, without being impeded by the filter.
There are different ways to implement software to monitor Internet activity. Hardware employee monitoring appliances work by configuring network devices to block access to entire IP addresses or domains. Software to monitor Internet activity usually blocks sites based on keywords or by comparing URLs to databases of web pages. Common hardware and software employee monitoring solutions are difficult to keep updated and extremely problematic to implement accurately. Because of this, software to monitor Internet activity typically have many false positives (sites wrongly blocked) or false negatives (sites wrongly allowed).
iPrism combines the best aspects of a hardware employee monitoring appliance (easy network deployment and independent management) with the best aspects of software to monitor Internet activity. iPrism provides business-friendly tools to enhance the effectiveness of employee monitoring:
- iGuard employee monitoring database, an industry-leading, fully human-reviewed database which categorizes webpages based on keyword content and context.
- Network compatibility as a combined hardware/software employee monitoring solution.
- More access to more sites through URL-based blocking rather than indiscriminately blocking entire IP addresses or domains.
- Both website and instant message filtering.
- Software to monitor internet activity, which features easy configuration and no administrative overhead.
- Employee monitoring notifications and reporting.
- User profiles, so different employees can access different categories of sites.
