I send a newsletter to a non-profit community group.
Here are some techniques I use, I was wondering what others do.
1. Ask permission to add them to newsletter list either via email or on mail-in paper slips (though they still sometimes complain)
2. beginning of subject line is always the same so they'll recognize me
3. "From:" address is my groups name instead of my name since many folks on the list don't know me personally.

My newsletter has a limited audience and is just sent to home owners in my neighborhood to keep them informed of community events. So far only 1/2 of the neighborhood has joined so we added a line on our annual dues form that reads "to be informed of upcoming events please include your email address with your slip".
The second year we did it we also added "please print clearly" Which seemed to help a lot
