The initial requirements for using SmarterStats are minimal. One
of the unique benefits of SmarterStats is the ability to manage the resources it
consumes. Therefore, the resources used by SmarterStats can be adjusted to work
in any environment with a variety of other desktop or server applications. For example,
on a machine with many other running applications, the system requirements can be
adjusted to account for a number of different factors on the server, like any other
processes that are running, the size of the individual web sites on the server,
the monthly traffic and the size of the log files generated, and more. Below you
will find the minimal requirements and a sample installation which may help you
decide what your system requirements could potentially be.
Currently, SmarterStats supports these common log file types: W3C, IIS, NCSA, NCSA
Extended, Apache, Apache NCSA, and IPlanet Common Logs.
In a high volume environment, it is recommended that IIS 5 or higher is used in
place of the SmarterStats Web Server. The purpose of the SmarterStats Web Server
is so that the product is fully functional upon installation, even without the existence
of IIS or other web servers. IIS is an enterprise level web server, and SmarterStats
takes advantage of many features in IIS which will provide the highest return on
investment.

Medium installation utilizing a couple of servers
Large distributed installation utilizing many
servers
- 450 MHz Processor
- 64MB RAM
- 100MB Hard Disk Space (only allows for SmarterStats, .NET framework and small web
site logs)
- The Microsoft.NET 1.1 Framework (with all applicable service packs and/or patches).
- Windows Operating System:
- Windows XP (Home or Professional, SP2 recommended)
- Windows 2000 Server (SP2 recommended)
- Windows 2003
- Administrators can access the Web Interface via Internet Explorer 5 and higher,
Netscape 6 and higher, or Mozilla.
- End Users can access the Web Interface from any browser
A sample installation of 150 Sites locally or through UNC and 50 Sites scheduled
through FTP with an average daily log file of 15 megs per site would require the
following configuration:
Windows 2000 or higher
RAM: 256mb
CPU: PIII 800
DISK: 1/3 of the total space that would be required to store the raw LOG formats.
IIS 5 or higher
The Remote Service itself can run on any server where log files reside. Extremely
large sites (i.e. more than 1,000,000 visits) with extremely large log files may
require the service to use up to 256MB of RAM. Obviously, this should be taken into
consideration when looking at a specific web server's hardware configuration (CPU,
available memory, etc.).
Minimum Requirements from a software/OS perspective include Windows 2000 Server
(SP2 recommended), Windows XP Professional, Windows 2003, and the .NET framework
(with all necessary patches and fixes).
Finally, the Web Interface communicates with the Remote Service via port 50003.
Therefore, if you are using a firewall or any other type of security measure that
would prohibit communication from this port, be sure to create a rule that would
open this port to avoid any difficulties running SmarterStats Enterprise Edition.
