What a week of weather. On the competition scene
brilliant sunshine and near calm conditions greeted anglers. The L.S.T.P.A.
held their end of
season competition on Sheelin on Saturday - results in next weeks

to the sunny calm conditions. Last Sunday Lakeland Anglers hosted
their end of season trout fly fishing competition. It was fished on
Owel, Derravaragh and Ennell and proved a huge success.
Lough Owel anglers will host an end of season competition on Friday
October 12th. Fishing is from 10-30pm with weigh-in 8pm Caffreys.
Derravaragh Anglers were also in action last Sunday and we received
the results of the annual raffle. The Athlone Anglers Association
held the last Trout competition of the season on Sunday

SHANNON
INTERNATIONAL RIVER BASIN DISTRICT CONSULTATION PROCESS COMMENCES
OCTOBER 9th
IRBD LOCAL AUTHORITIES INVITES YOU TO HAVE YOUR
SAY.....
A new approach is being taken to managing and
protecting our waters (all our inland coastal waters) New legislation
now requires that the Local Authorities in the Shannon IRBD have a
River Basin Management Plan in place for the whole of the Shannon
river basin by 2009, but before that is done there will be two
consultation periods.
The first consultation period is until 22 December,
2007 and relates to the key management issues which affect the waters
in the Shannon district. A new booklet called WATER MATTERS
sets out these issues in a very easy to read manner and explains how
they affect water quality, what controls are in place to deal with
these issues and if they are adequate to meet the required standards.

The trout fishing winds up on Friday October 12th on O'Flynn.
Conditions were not conducive to good angling due to the sunny calm
conditions. Two
fish were caught on Sunday on dry sedges by Matt Foley and Bernard Mannion. They
observed many fish rising but
proved difficult to catch. Both anglers fished on the River
Suck around Ballymoe and had 4 lovely fish from
2.25lbs to 4lbs.

BRAY ANGLERS ON OWEL....
Last week I spent a day on Owel with Bray angler
Thomas McMullan. Once again the weather was
brilliant and that evening we saw one of the most
beautiful sunsets ever. We did manage to land a
trout and rose quite a few more on the day. Thomas
is back this week and hopefully we will hook-up
with an Owel cracker before the season ends. While
we were fishing Owel we popped in to Brabson's Bay
for some lunch and dined with Westmeath Motors
pairing of Ray and son Noel Mc Entyre.
The lads were having a great day out and Ray was
dining on a great looking Stew.

LAKELAND ANGLERS HIT FORM AS TROUT SEASON
CLOSES...
What a week of weather, topped off by one of the
best weekends weather wise that is this year.
Brilliant sunshine and near calm conditions
greeted anglers last Saturday and Sunday on the
competition scene. Not the best for trout fly
fishing, still some great catches were recorded.
Once again the Ennell trout failed to take the
bait during the O'Malley Cup. Lakeland anglers end
of season competition was a huge success, even if
some of us anglers blanked, as I did myself.
Derravaragh Anglers were also in action last
Sunday and we received the results of the annual
raffle.

Last Sunday Lakeland Anglers hosted their end of
season trout fly fishing competition. Fished on
Owel Derravaragh, and Ennell this event proved a
huge success. The weigh- in and presentation was
held in Caffrey's bar & Lounge Mount street.
Conditions for the competition was quite
difficulty with calm conditions and brilliant
sunshine. Certainly not the best for trout fishing
but it was great to charge the batteries now that
we are looking down the line at a long winter. Ah
well maybe Santa will bring some new fishing gear.
Anyway back to the matter in hand. On Ennell John
Brennan produced a cracking trout weighing 1.60lbs
to take top rod on Ennell, second place was Aidan
Heffernan with 1.348lbs. On Derravaragh popular
angler Joe Keena produced the winner and won the
Knockeyone Perpetual Cup. This Cup was presented
to Lakeland anglers by the late Nickie Flood. On
Owel Ken Mc Carthy produced a super trout of
3.072lbs to take top rod, in second place
was Christy Cox 2.744lbs, and 3rd place Paul Owens
with 2.627lbs. The heaviest bag of trout from Owel
was caught by Andy Young. Andy landed 3 trout for
4.560lbs. This fine catch won Andy the Jack Doolan
sponsored prize. Also that night in Caffreys as
the norm the presentation of prizes took place for the trip
to Lough Conn earlier in the season.
Top lakeland angler for 2007 was Brendan Murray.
Brendan was presented with a beautiful mirror by
Dermot Caffrey of Caffreys Bar and Lounge who
sponsor this splendid prize. We will have the
photo in the coming week. John Tyrrell and Andy
Boyle were weigh masters on the night and Andy
thanked all who supported Lakeland Anglers during
the 2007 season especially
all the sponsors and the ladies who provide the
sambos on the night.
LOUGH DERRAVARAGH,
PRENDERGAST / KNOCKEYNE COMPETITION...
Derravaragh anglers hosted the Prendergast and
Knockeyne trout competition last Sunday. On the
day fishing quite a few anglers ventured out but
the fishing was
tough. Club member Joe Keena produced the winner
on the day. The annual Derravaragh Anglers raffle
took place recently and well known Mullingar
angler Ollie Dooner won first prize, second place
also came to town with Auctioneer Andy Duncan
coming out second. Full results as follows. 3rd
Paddy Hannon, 4th Cathroina O'Leary, 5th Asha
Syhes, 6th Theresa Quinn, 7th Cleary Electrical,
8th James Farrell, 9th Billy Hayden. The raffle
took place in Murtagh's bar & Lounge Multyfarnham
and the club would like to thank all who supported
the night. Derravaragh will close for trout
fishing on Friday 12th October. This winter some
cracking pike competitions are pencilled in. We
will have more on these next week.

Conway/Conroy Cup to Manus and John Conway watched

CONWAY/CONROY COMPETITION....
The last Trout competition which was for the Conway/Conroy Cup was
fished on Sunday 30th September. The day itself was calm which was
not good for the fly men but that didn’t stop the anglers and we had
one of the best entries of the season with twenty seven boats
containing forty seven anglers on the day. The fishing itself was
not great with only a few fish brought to the scales and it was left
to two men who had not fished in a good number of years to lead the
way.
The weigh in and presentation of prizes was held in the Coosan
Tavern that night where new management Michael and Marie Murphy
provided excellent hospitality. When the scales came down it was
Manus Conway and John Conway who topped the leader board with a fine
trout weighing 2lb 14ozs, these two lads hadn’t fished for a long
time so maybe this will encourage them to take up the rod and reel
again next year. Second place went father and son Tommy and Anthony
Moran for their trout which weighed 1lb 15ozs while Gerry Wykes
claimed third spot for his trout which was only one ounce lighter at
1lb 14ozs. Eddie O’Donovan with a trout weighing 1lb 11ozs 4drms was
duly awarded fourth place but in the tightest of finishes and only
2drms lighter were Paul and Joe Fallon in fifth place with a trout
weighing 1lb 11ozs 2drms.
This competition was sponsored by the Conway and Conroy families and
we would like to thank them for their continued and generous support
of this competition, we would also like to thank Tom Cunningham and
jimmy Flanagan who were our Captains of the Day and once again
Michael and Marie Murphy in the Coosan Tavern for their excellent
hospitality.
