What is phentermine and what is it used for?

Phentermine is a prescription medicine used together with a diet and exercise plans in the treatment of obesity in people with health conditions impeding the treatment with other medications (high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, etc). Phentermine is a stimulant similar to amphetamine.

Please note that the passage above doesn’t state all possible uses of phentermine. Address your therapist if you want to learn more about it.

Important info about phentermine

A person taking phentermine should remember that it’s forbidden to use it with other weight loss medications such as fenfluramine (Phen-Fen) or dexfenfluramine (Redux) due to pulmonary hypertension (fatal lung disorder) that their interaction may cause. Never take phentermine with other weight loss meds without first consulting your healthcare provider.

You should also remember that the effect of phentermine can impair your thinking or reactions. If you are still not sure about the effects this medication produces on you, be exceptionally careful when driving, operating heavy machinery or performing other potentially hazardous activities. Avoid taking alcohol throughout the course of your therapy with phentermine since it is known to increase some of this medication’s side effects.

Phentermine is habit-forming, therefore a person using it must never share it with other people for whom it wasn’t prescribed, especially with those who have a history of drug abuse or addiction. We strongly suggest you keep track of the number of pills that you are taking from your opened phentermine bottle in order to avoid the possibility of it being used by other members of your household.

A person trying to quit using phentermine after taking it for a long period of time may experience strong withdrawal symptoms, the most common of which include: depression and extreme tiredness. You should never try to stop taking phentermine all of a sudden. Discuss the ways of stopping this medication gradually with your doctor.

Important information for people planning to start using phentermine

You should wait for at least 14 days since the last intake of MAO inhibitors, such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) before you can start taking phentermine. The interaction of phentermine and the leftovers of MAOI that can be still found in your blood during 14 days after the last intake can lead to life-threatening side effects.

If you take phentermine with other weight loss medications such as fenfluramine (Phen-Fen) or dexfenfluramine (Redux), you run risks of suffering from pulmonary hypertension (a lung disease which can be fatal). Never start using new medications without consulting your doctor first.
Avoid using phentermine if you are allergic to it, any of its components or other stimulants. You may also not be able to use this medication if any of the following medical conditions is applicable to you:

• heart disease or high blood pressure;
• arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries);
• an overactive thyroid;
• glaucoma;
• if you are in an agitated state; or
• if you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse.

Prior to the beginning of the therapy with phentermine, you should let your doctor know about all drugs that you are allergic to. You must also inform your doctor if you have:

• problems with your thyroid,
• some kind of anxiety disorder,
• epilepsy or another seizure disorder, or
• diabetes.

You may be forbidden to take phentermine if you have any of the conditions stated above – and even if you will be allowed to use it, your doctor may suggest a dosage adjustment or a series of tests carried out during the course of therapy.

It’s still not clear if phentermine can cause any harm to a developing fetus, so you are not advised to take this medication while you are pregnant or if you are planning to become pregnant during the course of the treatment with phentermine. You are strongly advised to use an effective form of contraception while using phentermine. It’s also not known if phentermine can pass into breast milk or not, so you should always tell your doctor if you are currently breast-feeding a baby before starting your therapy with phentermine.

The safety and effectiveness of phentermine in children and teenagers under 16 years old has not been established yet, so one must not use this med to treat youngsters.

Usage directions

Always follow your doctor’s prescription when using phentermine. You must never exceed the dose or the period of therapy with phentermine unless told to do so by your doctor.

Long-term usage of phentermine may cause skin problems, insomnia, personality changes, hyperactivity, or excess irritability. This medication must be used for a short period of time only (a few weeks). Phentermine is assimilated best when taken with a full glass of water, on an empty stomach before breakfast. Please note that you shouldn’t take phentermine later than 10-14 hours before bedtime, since otherwise you will run risks of suffering from insomnia.

Phentermine tablets should be swallowed whole, without being crushed, chewed or broken. If you fail to do so, you will run risks of suffering from a heavy overdose of phentermine due to the fact that it’s an extended-release medication.

People who use phentermine for a long period of time may suffer from a strong withdrawal effect when stopping the therapy with this medication. Remember that you should not try to quit taking it on your own without discussing it with your therapist, since you might need to use less and less phentermine until you quit it completely.

If your symptoms are not improving or are even getting worse, you might need to stop taking phentermine. Never try to increase the dose in attempt to get better effect, since the overdose of this medication can cause serious, sometimes even fatal side effects.

Due to the fact that phentermine is a drug of abuse, we strongly suggest you keep an eye on the number of pills you use out of each opened bottle to avoid the possibility of your medication being secretly taken by other members of your household.

Store phentermine in a dry dark place away from excess heat and direct light. Make sure that the place you keep it in is located out of the reach of children and the people whom this med wasn’t prescribed for.

Missed dose

If for some reason you miss a dose of phentermine, take it as soon as you remember (but don’t forget that phentermine shouldn’t be used in the evening). If the time for the next dose has almost come, better skip the missed one and wait for some time to take the next scheduled dose. Never exceed the recommended dosage in attempt to catch up with the missed dose(s). If you happen to miss more than one dose, contact your healthcare provider for further directions.

If you suspect you have taken too much of phentermine, seek for emergency medical help immediately since an overdose of this medication can be fatal. The most common symptoms of a severe overdose with phentermine include but are not limited to the following ones: confusion, hallucinations, the feeling of restlessness or aggression, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, heart arrhythmia, shivering, rapid breathing, light-headedness, fainting, or seizure (convulsions).

A person using phentermine should avoid the following:
