Experience Hatley Park National Historic Site 

RRU's home is the exquisite estate and former home (1907 - 1937) of B.C. premier and lieutenant governor, the Honourable James Dunsmuir and his wife Laura. From 1937 to 1995 it housed Royal Roads Military College and became the home of Royal Roads University, Canada's first public university aimed at serving the knowledge needs of today's workplace.

Located 25 minutes from downtown Victoria, the 1908 Hatley Castle sits prominently in the middle of a 229-hectare Edwardian estate, adjacent to carefully manicured Italian, Japanese and rose gardens.

More than 15 kilometres of trails welcome guests, learners and RRU staff alike to experience nature, explore our preserved forests and enjoy the spectacular vistas that overlook the Esquimalt Lagoon and the Strait of Juan de Fuca which stretches across to the majestic Olympic Mountains in the U.S. state of Washington.

People who come to RRU never fail to comment on the picturesque site of its main campus. Though time is always at a premium for learners, you will still find them taking a little time to wander the estate and take in the idylic environment of Hatley Park.

Many make plans to return soon and take part in the ongoing activities offered by our tourism division. RRU is now embarking on a suite of experiential tourism activities.
